New York Looks To Bounce Back In The Opener Against Tampa Bay

After taking a loss in their previous game New York will look to bounce back in the opener of the three -game series against Tampa Bay who has  lost twelve consecutive series at Yankee Stadium, the longest streak ever by any team in the current building, and they have lost the series opener 11 straight series. No starter has been announced for either team.

New York who is a member of the American League East  comes into the game with a record of 74-44 and is second in the division. Tampa Bay meanwhile who is also apart of that division comes into the game with a record of 60-58 and is third in the division. "according to http://www.espn.com/mlb/standings

J.A. Happ will get the start for New York. The left  -hander comes into the game with a record of 12-6 with a 4.07 earn run average. "according to http://m.mlb.com/player/457918/ja-happ The southpaw beat Texas in his first start back from hand, foot and mouth disease, tossing six innings of three-run ball. Happ is 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA in two starts since coming over from the Blue Jays in late July. "according to http://mlb.mlb.com/news/probable_pitchers/index.jsp?c_id=nyy He will oppose Tampa Bay right -hander Hunter Wood who comes into the game with a record of 0-0 to go along with a 3.91 earn run average. "according to http://m.mlb.com/player/621056/hunter-wood Wood has recorded four outs or more in five of his nine relief appearances. He has a 3.60 ERA with three home runs and a .255 opposing average out of the bullpen. "according to http://mlb.mlb.com/news/probable_pitchers/index.jsp?c_id=nyy

As for New York's previous game,

They lost to the Mets in a game that had to be made up because of a rainout.

Luis Severino who started the season off  on the right foot has struggled as of late and his struggles continued Monday night against their crosstown rival.

What were the chances, Boone was asked, he planned to start Jacob deGrom when the Yankees made up their postponed game against the Mets? The non-waiver Trade Deadline just a week away at the time, rumors swirled around idea of the Mets moving deGrom, maybe even to their crosstown rivals. "according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/luis-severinos-second-half-struggles-continue/c-290164840

That hypothetical -- tantalizing as it was at the time -- of course, never became reality. The Mets held on to deGrom on July 31, while the Yankees pivoted to other options, acquiring several other pitchers to pad their rotation from the back end up. By the time the two teams reunited for Monday's makeup tilt -- which the Mets won, 8-5 -- the Yankees' need for that depth had never been greater. "according to  https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/luis-severinos-second-half-struggles-continue/c-290164840

he continued struggles of Luis Severino make that so. On the day they placed CC Sabathia on the disabled list, the Yankees also received the shortest effort of the season from Severino, whose second-half struggles continued opposite deGrom and in front of a sellout crowd of 47,233 at Yankee Stadium. Severino was tagged for four runs in four innings, a relative bounty of support compared to what the Mets typically provide their ace, and suffered his fourth loss in five starts. That both Boone and Severino maintained the All-Star righty hander is healthy only make his struggles more vexing. "according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/luis-severinos-second-half-struggles-continue/c-290164840

"We got to help him and get to the bottom of it. Physically, I think he's sound, but we've got to get this righted," Boone said. "And that's on all of us, because he's so important." "according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/luis-severinos-second-half-struggles-continue/c-290164840

Doing so won't involve skipping Severino in the rotation or pushing him back, Boone said. The Yankees already manipulated Severino's workload in recent weeks, lining him up to receive extra rest after the All-Star break. They are in a less of a position to do so now, with Sabathia (right knee) sidelined for at least one start and Sonny Gray already demoted to the bullpen. Though they maintain the second-best record in the Majors, the Yankees' loss pushed them 10 games back of the Red Sox in the American League East. "according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/luis-severinos-second-half-struggles-continue/c-290164840

It also ensured the two New York teams ended up splitting this year's Interleague crop of games, each earning three wins apiece. "according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/luis-severinos-second-half-struggles-continue/c-290164840

"I'm not tired .. it's nothing out of the ordinary," Severino said. "Things aren't going my way right now, but I know that I'll work and try to fix it. I keep making the same mistakes, over and over." "according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/luis-severinos-second-half-struggles-continue/c-290164840

By that, Severino meant he continues to cough up runs early in starts, and via the long ball. Monday marked the fifth time in sixth starts Severino allowed a first-inning tally, this time courtesy of Amed Rosario's leadoff dinger. Severino then departed shortly after Jose Bautista gave the Mets another lead with a two-run shot in the fourth, his exit ending the advertised pitching duel after just four frames. Though the Yankees chipped away in his absence, with a run in the fifth and two more on Miguel Andujar's homer in the eighth, three home runs A.J. Cole allowed in relief of Severino had ballooned the Mets' lead by then. "according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/luis-severinos-second-half-struggles-continue/c-290164840

deGrom, in response, struck out 12 and allowed three runs (two earned) over 6 2/3 innings to earn his seventh win in 24 tries, despite his 1.81 ERA. "according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/luis-severinos-second-half-struggles-continue/c-290164840

Severino's ERA wasn't much higher in late July, when this game was originally set to be played. He and deGrom were both legit Cy Young candidates in their respective leagues by then. But since then, their candidacies have veered in opposite directions. While deGrom appears to be gaining momentum toward the National League version of the award, Severino will now likely need to turnaround his season in a historic way to re-enter the American League running. The Yankees are more concerned with getting him back to just being effective -- their ace has allowed 23 runs over his last 26 innings pitched. Severino now owns a 7.50 ERA with 11 home runs allowed over his last seven starts. He had a 1.98 ERA with just six homers allowed through his first 18 starts of 2018. "according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/luis-severinos-second-half-struggles-continue/c-290164840

"The last couple outings where I feel like I see that sign where he's getting that life back on both his fastball and his slider, I didn't see that life as much today," Boone said. "according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/luis-severinos-second-half-struggles-continue/c-290164840

SOUND SMART
Few starters in baseball rely more on their fastball than Severino, who routinely flirts with triple digits with his heater. But his signature heat was hit Monday unlike ever before. He allowed Bautista's opposite-field homer on a 99-mph fastball -- the hardest pitch Severino has allowed on a round-tripper over the course of his four-year career. "according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/luis-severinos-second-half-struggles-continue/c-290164840

WHO SAYS YOU CAN'T GO HOME?
Drafted by the Yankees in 2006, right-hander George Kontos made his first appearance back with the club after being re-acquired from the Indians for cash on Aug. 4. Kontos, whose contract was purchased from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to fill Sabathia's spot on the roster, appeared in seven games as a rookie with New York in 2011. Three teams and 342 more appearances connected that stint with Monday, when he entered in place of Cole and logged 1 2/3 scoreless innings. "according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/luis-severinos-second-half-struggles-continue/c-290164840

HE SAID IT
"He's still our guy. He's still the guy we lean to. He's the guy we want out there in big situations. Guys go through this. We've seen it before. If there was a big dip in velocity or stuff like that, I'd be a little worried. … If we can get a little more execution, I think we'll be good." -- Yankees catcher Austin Romine, on Severino "according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/luis-severinos-second-half-struggles-continue/c-290164840

MITEL REPLAY OF THE DAY
Boone challenged after Michael Conforto was ruled safe attempting to steal second in the fifth, after Conforto's foot appeared to come off the second base bag as Gleyber Torres applied the tag. So confident with the decision were the Yankees, that a good portion of their team began jogging off the field while umpires reviewed the play. Their presumption proved correct when umpires reversed the call, ruling Conforto out, following a two-minute, 28-second review. "according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/luis-severinos-second-half-struggles-continue/c-290164840

Umpires briefly reviewed another call in the ninth, when Torres' error led to the Mets' final run of the night. Though Torres dropped Didi Gregorius' throw on a potential double play ball, umpires ruled he dropped it on the exchange, making the force at second count despite the clumsiness. A 51-second review confirmed their call on the field. "according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/luis-severinos-second-half-struggles-continue/c-290164840

As for Tampa Bay they're also coming off a loss but to a division foe in Toronto.

Early returns on Tyler Glasnow have continued to impress, as the 24-year-old struck out six over five-plus innings on Sunday. "according to https://www.mlb.com/rays/news/tyler-glasnow-strikes-out-6-but-rays-fall/c-289999534

The 24-year-old left the game after surrendering a leadoff walk to Luke Maile in the sixth inning that eventually came around to score, the only run surrendered by Glasnow in a 2-1 loss to the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre. "according to https://www.mlb.com/rays/news/tyler-glasnow-strikes-out-6-but-rays-fall/c-289999534

"Similar strike throwing, this time he had to kind of pitch out of some jams, which was good to see," Rays manager Kevin Cash said. "Another really really strong performance." "according to https://www.mlb.com/rays/news/tyler-glasnow-strikes-out-6-but-rays-fall/c-289999534

Glasnow got into trouble in the fourth inning, giving up a leadoff single to Devon Travis who quickly stole second, then moved to third on a Justin Smoak groundout. The Rays brought their infield in to hold the one-run lead, but Glasnow got Randal Grichuck swinging on a breaking ball that bounced in the dirt. He then fanned Teoscar Hernandez on a 98.7-mph fastball to end the inning. "according to https://www.mlb.com/rays/news/tyler-glasnow-strikes-out-6-but-rays-fall/c-289999534

"When you see Major league hitters like we did today … when they're swinging at 55-foot breaking balls, it's pretty telling how electric his stuff can be," Cash said. "according to https://www.mlb.com/rays/news/tyler-glasnow-strikes-out-6-but-rays-fall/c-289999534

Glasnow threw a season-high 79 pitches, 60.8 percent of them for strikes. His fastball sat at 97.1 mph and maxed out at 99.7 mph on the afternoon. Entering play Sunday, he had the third hardest average fastball for Major League starting pitchers, just behind Luis Severino (97.6) and Noah Syndergaard(97.5). "according to https://www.mlb.com/rays/news/tyler-glasnow-strikes-out-6-but-rays-fall/c-289999534

"I went through the Minor Leagues starting, so going back out there is a familiar feeling," Glasnow said. "I've been feeling good recently, just some physical adjustments and just going out there with some confidence is helping me." "according to https://www.mlb.com/rays/news/tyler-glasnow-strikes-out-6-but-rays-fall/c-289999534

After Willy Adames singled in a run in the fourth, Tampa Bay gave up the lead in the sixth inning when Jose Alverado allowed a pinch-hit double to Kevin Pillar and then a single to Travis that scored Maile to tie the game. Then two batters later, Pillar scored the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice from Grichuk. "according to https://www.mlb.com/rays/news/tyler-glasnow-strikes-out-6-but-rays-fall/c-289999534

Alvarado recorded just one out and was followed by Ryne Stanek , who pitched two-thirds of an inning. Then Ryan Yarborough  finished the afternoon. "according to https://www.mlb.com/rays/news/tyler-glasnow-strikes-out-6-but-rays-fall/c-289999534

Marcus Stroman went five innings for the Blue Jays, allowing just one run and five hits, but exited the game early with a developing blister. "according to https://www.mlb.com/rays/news/tyler-glasnow-strikes-out-6-but-rays-fall/c-289999534

"[Stroman] did a nice job of getting some cutters into lefties, we just couldn't make the adjustment," Cash said. "It seemed like he had it going pretty good, then they turned it over to the bullpen and everybody followed suit." "according to https://www.mlb.com/rays/news/tyler-glasnow-strikes-out-6-but-rays-fall/c-289999534

Danny Barnes got into trouble in the seventh inning, but Tyler Clippard shut down the Rays' offense before Ken Giles  closed out the game and recorded the save. "according to https://www.mlb.com/rays/news/tyler-glasnow-strikes-out-6-but-rays-fall/c-289999534

MOMENT THAT MATTERED
Rays can't convert in seventh:
After a pair of quick outs, Brandon Lowe walked before moving to third on Perez's single. Blue Jays manager John Gibbons yanked Barnes, and Clippard forced Mallex Smith to ground out to second. "according to https://www.mlb.com/rays/news/tyler-glasnow-strikes-out-6-but-rays-fall/c-289999534

MITEL REPLAY OF THE DAY
Grichuk hit a dribbler just in front of the plate that Michael Perezcorralled and looked off Pillar at third before firing to first base for the second out of the inning. As Perez made the throw, Pillar came charging down for home forcing a play at the plate, but the Blue Jays center fielder slid around Stanek's tag for the go-ahead run. Tampa Bay challenged the play, but the call stood, meaning there was not enough evidence to overturn the call. "according to https://www.mlb.com/rays/news/tyler-glasnow-strikes-out-6-but-rays-fall/c-289999534

"Initially I was thinking about making a fake throw, but looking at the runner going to first base, he was half way down the line already so I decided to make the sure out at first," Perez said through a translator. "I mean it was a good play from Pillar, he had a good read on it, and it was close at the plate." "according to https://www.mlb.com/rays/news/tyler-glasnow-strikes-out-6-but-rays-fall/c-289999534

ROSTER MOVES
The Rays will activate right-hander Chaz Roe  from the 10-day disabled list prior to Tuesday's game against the Yankees. Roe has a 3.60 ERA over 35 innings this season. Right-hander Jaime Schultz was optioned to Triple-A Durham following Sunday's game. "according to https://www.mlb.com/rays/news/tyler-glasnow-strikes-out-6-but-rays-fall/c-289999534
