New York And San Diego Look To Bounce Back In The Bronx

After a seven game road trip New York returns to the Bronx for a seven game homestand starting with San Diego on Memorial Day where both teams will look to bounce back from their recent setbacks.

New York who is a member of the American League East comes into the opening game of the three game series with a record of 34-18 while San Diego who is a member of the National League West comes into the opening game of the three game series with a record of 28-25. “according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/standings

The starter for the opening game for New York has yet to be decided but San Diego however has decided on a starter for the opening game. San Diego will start left-hander Matt Straham who comes into the opening game with a record of 2-3 with a 3.06 earn run average. Strahm's first start of the season was a rocky one. Since then, however, he's made eight starts with a 2.28 ERA, and he's become a master of efficiency. Even with a pitch count around 90, he's averaged nearly six innings per game in those eight outings. “according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/roster/probable-pitchers

As for New York’s previous game,

Despite taking 2-3 from Kansas City in Missouri they couldn’t complete the sweep.

The pitch that kept the Yankees from celebrating a perfect road trip chopped off of Whit Merrifield's bat in the 10th inning on Sunday afternoon, pounding into the sun-drenched infield dirt twice. As Gio Urshela backed up to try to catch a better hop, the slick-fielding third baseman immediately knew he was in trouble. “according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/yankees-win-streak-snapped-in-kc

Merrifield's hit ticked off of Urshela's glove and nestled into the outfield grass as Billy Hamilton raced home with the tiebreaking run, snapping the Yankees' seven-game winning streak with an 8-7 loss to the Royals at Kauffman Stadium. “according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/yankees-win-streak-snapped-in-kc

"It took a bad hop. Nothing I can do," Urshela said. "It's definitely a hard play. The instinct is to get your glove on the ball any way possible to stop it from going by, but that didn't happen today." “according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/yankees-win-streak-snapped-in-kc

Having swept the Orioles in a four-game series before securing both ends of Saturday's doubleheader -- and with a Memorial Day afternoon contest scheduled against the Padres at Yankee Stadium on Monday -- manager Aaron Boone indicated that the Yankees had lost a battle to win the war. “according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/yankees-win-streak-snapped-in-kc

That was part of why Nestor Cortes Jr. was trusted to hurl four scoreless innings, saving a bullpen that has been taxed during the week on the road. Domingo Germán served up four homers in his ugliest start of the year, but the Yanks still nearly came back to steal one.”according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/yankees-win-streak-snapped-in-kc

New York tied the game against Ian Kennedy. Clint Frazier and Urshela stroked one-out singles and DJ LeMahieu trimmed the deficit with a run-scoring hit. After a walk, Aaron Hicks delivered the game-tying knock, a two-run single through the right side of the infield.”according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/yankees-win-streak-snapped-in-kc

"You're always disappointed when you lose in the moment, but the competition is so good right now from everyone," Boone said. "Obviously we were up against it today from pitch usage. Nestor comes in and picks us up big-time, and we get that bad hop at the end, otherwise I'm sure we would have got to them. Great effort by the guys. Unfortunately, we came up short."“according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/yankees-win-streak-snapped-in-kc

With German out of the game after five innings, Cortes shouldered the load by recording 12 outs. His hairiest moment came in the ninth inning, as Alex Gordon and Hunter Dozier hit two-out singles. A walk to Jorge Soler loaded the bases, pushing the potential winning run 90 feet away, and Cortes got Ryan O'Hearn to pop out and send the game to the 10th. “according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/yankees-win-streak-snapped-in-kc

"Coming into the game, we were down and I knew I had to eat up innings because the bullpen was a little shot," Cortes said. "That's exactly what I did. I got myself into a spot in the ninth, but I was able to get out of it." “according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/yankees-win-streak-snapped-in-kc

The ninth-inning rally off former Yankees prospect Kennedy took German off the hook after the right-hander served up four homers and endured his first clunker in more than a month, snapping a personal six-start winning streak that began on April 23 in Anaheim.”according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/yankees-win-streak-snapped-in-kc

Martin Maldonado gave the Royals the lead with a three-run homer in the second inning, while O'Hearn tagged the righty with a solo shot in the fourth, and Dozier and Soler went back-to-back in the fifth as Kansas City built a 7-1 advantage. “according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/yankees-win-streak-snapped-in-kc

"It's definitely a bad day for me today," German said through an interpreter. "I couldn't command my pitches today and missed the location. That's what happens when you miss location. After the Maldonado at-bat, I wasn't able to execute the pitches the way I wanted." “according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/yankees-win-streak-snapped-in-kc

German, who was vying to become the Majors' first 10-game winner this season, was charged with seven runs and nine hits over five innings. He walked none and struck out six. “according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/yankees-win-streak-snapped-in-kc

"The line is not good, but I thought he threw the ball all right overall," Boone said. "I thought he got hurt with some soft-hit traffic that cost him a little bit." “according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/yankees-win-streak-snapped-in-kc

The Yanks managed four runs (one earned) over six innings against starter Danny Duffy. Frazier knocked a run-scoring single in the second inning and Gleyber Torres trimmed the deficit with his 13th homer, a three-run shot off Duffy in the sixth. “according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/yankees-win-streak-snapped-in-kc

"It was a great trip for us," Urshela said. "We'll go home and keep fighting." “according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/yankees-win-streak-snapped-in-kc

Like New York, San Diego also took two out of three in their series against Toronto but they couldn’t complete the sweep.

Less than 24 hours after the Padres launched seven home runs in a rout of the Blue Jays, they found themselves on the other end of the long-ball barrage. “according to https://www.mlb.com/padres/news/padres-lose-to-blue-jays-in-series-finale

The Padres were forced to call a late audible on Sunday morning, scratching right-handed phenom Chris Paddack from his scheduled start with a stiff neck. Lefty reliever Robbie Erlin got the start in his place and gave the Padres two innings out of the gate, but they were forced to fight an uphill battle all afternoon in the 10-1 loss at Rogers Centre. “according to https://www.mlb.com/padres/news/padres-lose-to-blue-jays-in-series-finale

Erlin limited the damage to just one run over his two frames and was followed out of the bullpen by Matt Wisler, who allowed a pair of runs over two innings of his own. Those both came on solo home runs, and that hard contact kept coming when Sunday’s callup, Luis Perdomo, took over in the fifth. “according to https://www.mlb.com/padres/news/padres-lose-to-blue-jays-in-series-finale

Erlin has started in the past but, given the short notice Sunday morning, he decided to treat the first inning just like he was entering in the sixth or seventh.”according to https://www.mlb.com/padres/news/padres-lose-to-blue-jays-in-series-finale

“I just warmed up like a normal bullpen situation because that’s what I’ve been doing all year and I’m used to it,” Erlin said. “according to https://www.mlb.com/padres/news/padres-lose-to-blue-jays-in-series-finale

The Blue Jays went deep four times, with all four being 400-plus foot shots with exit velocities north of 100 mph. San Diego scraped together 10 hits of its own, but without the power they showed on Saturday, the Padres weren’t able to string it together to produce runs.”according to https://www.mlb.com/padres/news/padres-lose-to-blue-jays-in-series-finale

Perdomo was tasked with eating some innings and saving his teammates in the bullpen through the middle of the game. The right-hander has spent the majority of his career as a starter, but made the transition to being a full-time reliever this season for the Padres. Perdomo allowed four runs on seven hits -- his three innings and 57 pitches both were season highs for the 26-year-old.

“I just don’t think it was a good day,” said manager Andy Green after the loss. “I think those guys are plenty capable of going out there and throwing up zeros, they just didn’t do it today. We’ve seen all of those guys better than they were this day. It happens from time to time.” “according to https://www.mlb.com/padres/news/padres-lose-to-blue-jays-in-series-finale

San Diego had a chance to chip away at the Blue Jays' lead in the top of the seventh inning, but a hard-luck double play quickly stole the Padres' momentum. With Austin Allen and Ty France on second and third with no outs, Manuel Margot sent a soft liner back up the middle but second baseman Cavan Biggio was positioned to make the catch and step on the bag quickly to turn two. Greg Garcia then struck out swinging to end the inning without a run crossing.”according to https://www.mlb.com/padres/news/padres-lose-to-blue-jays-in-series-finale

“We had some hits, but didn’t really string enough together to do any damage outside of Wil’s home run,” Green said. “After that, I thought we had decent at-bats. We kind of dug ourselves a hole we couldn’t dig out of today.” “according to https://www.mlb.com/padres/news/padres-lose-to-blue-jays-in-series-finale

Wil Myers might be circling his next trip to Rogers Centre on the calendar after his bat jumped to life in the final two games of the series in Toronto. “according to https://www.mlb.com/padres/news/padres-lose-to-blue-jays-in-series-finale

After homering twice in Saturday’s big 19-4 win, Myers went deep again on Sunday off of Marcus Stroman. Measuring in at 414 feet with an exit velocity of 105 mph, Myers got all of it against one of the league’s better pitchers.”according to https://www.mlb.com/padres/news/padres-lose-to-blue-jays-in-series-finale

First pitch is set for 1:05pm from Yankee Stadium. The game will be televised on Yes and FSSD.
