BASKETBALL

The Reality Is One And Done

As fans of the game, we watch from November to April if we're lucky that our favorite team makes it to the final four or maybe you watch the whole tournament even if your team is eliminated but that's totally up to you.

In the game today there is always a lot of roster turnover in the off -season because some players choose to go pro after one or two years.

This off-season early departures after one year included Duke freshman forward, Jayson Tatum and freshman combo guard Frank Jackson while sophomore guard Luke Kennard who was Duke's leading scorer last season at 19.5 points per game also decided to declare for the draft.  "according to http://www.goduke.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=4200&ATCLID=211550405&KEY=

Eight miles down the road in Chapel Hill, where North Carolina celebrated their fifth national title they also had early departures that included junior guard Justin Jackson who declared for the draft.  He averaged 18.3 points. What about the players that decide to stay for four years like Duke guard Grayson Allen and North Carolina guard  Joel Berry who both are returning for their senior season?  For players to stay four years it not only gives  stability to their teams but gives them veteran leadership to help guide the younger players.

During Grayson Allen's junior season he averaged 14.5 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. He had this to stay about his decision to return.  "The last few weeks have provided the opportunity for a lot of reflection and prayer," Allen said in a statement released by the school. "I'm a firm believer that when something feels right, you go with it. The chance to play with next year's team just felt right." Joel Berry had this to say about returning to North Carolina.

Berry said he had reversed course after conferring with his family and said he can prepare for the NBA by playing "against the best college competition in the country."

Berry says, "There's no reason to rush leaving school."

In reality, that's the way it is nowadays and not only do coaches have to adapt to it but the fans do as well although we may not like it.  It was announced today that this year at Duke there is a good chance that Wendell Carter, Gary Trent, and Trevon Duval will be next up.
