NC State Faces Seton Hall In The First Round Of The NCAA Tournament

NC State who is out of the Atlantic Coast Conference  returns to the NCAA Tournament in Kevin Keatts first year in Raleigh after a three year absence where they will take on Seton Hall in  in the first round in Witchita Kansas.

The last time they made an appearance was back in 2015 when Mark Gottfried was the head coach. 

NC State comes into the tournament as the ninth seed  with a record of 21-11 and 10-8 in the Atlantic Coast Conference after their loss to Boston College in the Atlantic Coast Conference  Tournament.

The NC State men's basketball team's comeback attempt came up just short as it fell to Boston College, 91-87, in the second round of the ACC Tournament Wednesday afternoon. Allerik Freeman led NC State in scoring for the seventh consecutive game, posting 21 points on 5-for-7 shooting from long range. Omer Yurtseven shot 8-of-16 from the field on the way to scoring 20 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Torin Dorn (13), Sam Hunt (13), and Markell Johnson (10) joined them in double figures. The Wolfpack scored the first basket of the game and did not lead again. Boston College jumped out to an early 17-7 lead with the help of an 8-0 run, with Ky Bowman scoring all eight of those points for the Eagles. The Pack pulled the game to within six on two occasions in the opening period, but Boston College opened up a lead as big as 16 in the first half. Jordan Chatman opened up second-half scoring, knocking down a three to give Boston College its biggest lead of the day at 17 points.

Allerik Freeman made a three-pointer with 5:44 to go to put NC State within six. On the next possession, Hunt drilled a triple and was fouled in the process. He converted the free throw to trim Boston College's lead to just two at 75-73, and Yurtseven went on to hit the tying layup on the Pack's next possession. The teams matched basket for basket, with the score knotted up a total of four times in the final 3:28 of the game, but the Eagles went a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stipe down the line to secure the victory. Senior Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored 17 points and hit a three-point play with 11 seconds remaining in the game to put the Seton Hall men's basketball team up one point over Butler, but Tyler Wideman cleaned up a Kamar Baldwin miss with a put-back layup with 3.6 seconds left to lift the Bulldogs past the Pirates, 75-74, Thursday night in the BIG EAST Tournament quarterfinals at Madison Square Garden. In addition to his 17 points, Carrington issued seven assists and grabbed six rebounds. Turning Point

In the second half, Seton Hall went cold on offense, shooting only 8-for-28 from the field. With the Pirates trailing by two, sophomore Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) buried a huge three-pointer with under a minute to go to reclaim a one-point lead, but Baldwin again came through with a slash to the basket to go up, 72-71.   • Seton Hall shot 46.3 percent from the field (25-for-54), but it was a tale of two halves as the Pirates were 65.4 percent in the first half and only 28.6 percent in the second half. The Hall was also 50 percent from three (9-for-18) and 78.9 percent (15-for-19) at the line.
  • Butler shot 47.6 percent (30-for-63) from the field, 23.1 percent (6-for-26) from behind the arc and 60 percent (9-for-15) at the line.
  • The Pirates out-rebounded Butler 38-29, but they were outscored in the paint, 38-28.
  • Carrington led the Pirates with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting with seven assists and six rebounds.
  • Delgado missed a double-double by one rebound as he finished with 13 points and nine rebounds.
  • Sanogo had 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting as he came only two points shy of his career high.

News & Notes

  • Seton Hall lost in the BIG EAST quarterfinals for the first time since 2003, snapping a three-game winning streak. This was also Seton Hall's first loss when the No. 3 seed.
  • The defeat also snapped Seton Hall's three-game winning streak over Butler. The Pirates are now 4-8 all-time against the Bulldogs, 1-1 in the conference tournament.
  • The Pirates fell to 17-9 in conference tournament games when the higher seed.
  • Seton Hall dropped to 63-7 in its last 70 games when holding a lead of at least seven points at any juncture of the game.
  • This was the fourth time that Seton Hall ended the regular season and played its first conference tournament game against the same opponent. It's the first time that the Pirates lost the conference tournament game in that scenario.
