Dereck Lively committed to Duke, Jon Scheyer!

Why?

Dereck Lively who is in the class of 2022 had this to say about committing to Duke, Jon Scheyer!

"I like the whole idea of the Brotherhood, Duke basketball and Duke University," Lively told ESPN. "I believe next year's team has a chance to make a deep run in the NCAA tournament and maybe a national championship. After my playing career, a Duke degree is important to me."

We developed a real good connection,"[Their plan is to] help me develop to become an NBA player. To help me master my game on the perimeter and inside-out."

Dereck Lively was Duke coach-in-waiting Jon Scheyer's first scholarship offer after being named Mike Krzyzewski's replacement.

Dereck Lively is a 7-foot-1 center from Westtown School (Pennsylvania), Lively is ranked No. 2 in the ESPN 100 for 2022. Lively rose quickly during the spring and early summer into five-star status, and then became a real threat for the No. 1 spot after an impressive July on the Nike EYBL circuit with Team Final.

He's one of the elite defensive players in the 2022 class, leading the EYBL in blocks at 3.7 per game. Lively added 8.4 points and 6.7 rebounds, while also making 11 3-pointers in 15 games. He had 13 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks in the Peach Jam championship game.

Dereck Lively has made steady and strong progress over the last two years. He has impressive agility, mobility and skill for his size, and has begun playing off the bounce and making 3s with confidence. His calling card is his rim protection, but can also switch away from the basket. He has a 7-foot-8 wingspan and explosive leaping ability. Offensively, Lively has soft hands to catch lobs and drop-off passes. He has tremendous upside as he develops more of a post presence with added bulk.

Dereck Lively’s Head Coach Seth Berger had this to say about Dereck Lively!

"Dereck is an amazing player and teammate. He is always committed to winning above all," said Seth Berger, Lively's coach at Westtown. "Even with all of his physical and mental gifts, he is most of all a warrior that goes into battle for his team. It's been incredible to watch him grow as a player and a young man. Dereck has made a great choice to play for Jon Scheyer, who will be up to the challenge of continuing the Duke tradition of excellence on and off the court.

In the class of 2022 Dereck Lively joins Dariq Whitehead (No. 5 overall), skilled center Kyle Filipowski (No. 10) and outstanding 3-point shooter Jaden Schutt (No. 47) in the Blue Devils' group.

Dariq Whitehead had this to say about committing to Duke!

Growing up, Duke has always been the school of my dreams," Whitehead told ESPN. "I loved Coach K, the style of play and the type of players he recruited. Once my recruiting process began, I started having mixed feelings seeing all the other opportunities out there. I was getting so much love from different schools it made my decision hard. It wasn't until my official visit, the moment I stepped foot on campus, I knew Duke was home."

At the end of the day, they just checked all of the boxes for me," Filipowski told ESPN. "They are a national-level team, my academics were very important to me, and I had a good feel for the environment and campus. Just being around that type of environment and having those relationships, I really feel like when I'm done with my time at Duke I'll be the best version of myself, both on and off the court. I can just envision myself growing there with the people I'm surrounding myself with."

Jaden Schutt had this to say about committing to Duke, Jon Scheyer!

"It was just the relationship with the coaching staff; they never really pressured me," Schutt told ESPN. "I just felt I could talk to them about anything, I just enjoyed talking to them. It didn't feel like I was being recruited. They made me feel like a priority, but it felt all genuine. I just believe in coach [Jon] Scheyer and the vision he has for me fits the same vision I have for myself."

Was Jaden Schutt’s decision to come to Duke a factor that Jon Scheyer was also a shooting guard for Duke?

Jaden Schutt had this to say about that!

"It was a huge factor," he said. "We have a lot of similarities. He's the main guy I've been talking to on the phone. Any questions I have for him, he's been great at answering. We talk about things besides basketball; that means a lot. It's a great relationship, I felt comfortable."
