Mason Williams Getting His Opportunity With New York As He Replaces Aaron Hicks In Oakland

It was announced today that Mason Williams is the short term replacement for center fielder  Aaron Hicks.

After the potential All-Star tweaked his Achilles tendon in the extra-inning loss to the Oakland Athletics on Thursday, New York has called upon Mason Williams fill the void. He will be joining the team for Friday night’s game on the West Coast. "according to https://www.outsidepitchmlb.com/new-york-yankees-mason-williams/7134

Williams — who was a fourth-round draft pick by the organization back in 2010 — has had his fair share of ups and downs. Once pegged as the center fielder of the future, a rash of injuries cooled off his potential. A lifetime .272 hitter, Williams, 25, is off to a slow start with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, as evidenced by his triple slash of .243/.289/.275 over 218 at-bats. In 20 big league games, he’s sporting a career average of .292 with an OPS of .758. "according to https://www.outsidepitchmlb.com/new-york-yankees-mason-williams/71344

If fans expect Williams to adequately perform in Hicks’ place, there will be unrealistic expectations for the youngster. The second-year Yankee has done a little bit of everything in pinstripes in 2017, including hit for average (.308), power (10 home runs, 36 RBI), showcase his impressive eye at the plate (34 walks, 38 strikeouts), and display his speed and defensive ability out in center field. Many expected either Clint Frazier or Dustin Fowler — two of the organization’s best outfield prospects in Triple-A — to be the next men up if an injury occurred. Both are deserving of the honor but Williams is on the 40-man roster and Hicks hasn’t been placed on the disabled list as of yet. If the injury becomes a greater concern for New York, Fowler or Frazier may get their first crack at Major League Baseball. "according to https://www.outsidepitchmlb.com/new-york-yankees-mason-williams/71344
