New York Acquires Parker Bridwell From Los Angeles

From the West Coast to the East Coast.

The Yankees on Monday claimed right-handed pitcher Parker Bridwell off waivers from the Angels. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Yanks designated infielder Ronald Torreyes for assignment. “according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/yanks-get-parker-bridwell-dfa-ronald-torreyes/c-301110130

Bridwell, 27, struggled in limited action with the Angels in 2018, allowing 13 earned runs in 6 2/3 innings for a 17.55 ERA. He spent the majority of the year on the Minor League disabled list with a right elbow injury. “according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/yanks-get-parker-bridwell-dfa-ronald-torreyes/c-301110130

After reaching the big leagues with the Orioles in 2016, Bridwell was dealt to the Angels in April 2017 and enjoyed a promising rookie campaign, going 10-3 with a 3.64 ERA in 21 games (20 starts) with Los Angeles. “according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/yanks-get-parker-bridwell-dfa-ronald-torreyes/c-301110130

Torreyes has spent the last three seasons with the Yankees, who selected him off waivers from the Angels in 2016. He hit .281/.308/.374 in 221 games with New York. “according to https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/yanks-get-parker-bridwell-dfa-ronald-torreyes/c-301110130

Torreyes' breakout campaign came in 2017, when he batted .292/.314/.375 with 92 hits and 36 RBIs in 108 games. Due to the ascent of American League Rookie of the Year Award finalists Miguel Andujar and Gleyber Torres in '18, however, Torreyes played in only 41 big league games this past season.

When a player's contract is designated for assignment -- often abbreviated "DFA" -- that player is immediately removed from his club's 40-man roster, and 25-man roster if he was on that as well. Within seven days of the transaction (it was previously 10 days), the player must either be traded, released or placed on irrevocable outright waivers.
