With Joanne P. McCallie stepping down after thirteen season as the head of Duke Women’s Basketball it’s time to find the next head coach of the program.

Who are the candidates that could possibly be considered to be the next head coach of the Duke Women’s Basketball program?

Katie Meier who is a former Duke Women’s Basketball player.

When did she play for Duke?

From 1986-1990. She played for head coach Debbie Leonard, “according to https://miamihurricanes.com/sports/wbball/roster/season/2020-21/coach/katie-meier/

During her playing career at Duke Meier wasted no time making her mark at Duke, earning ACC Rookie of the Year and Basketball Yearbook Freshman All-America honors in 1986. Meier injured her knee in 1988 during her junior season and ultimately missed the entire 1988-89 campaign while recovering.https://miamihurricanes.com/sports/wbball/roster/season/2020-21/coach/katie-meier/

She currently ranks among the school’s all-time career leaders in scoring average (16.2 points per game), steals (232), free throws made (447) and free throws attempted (624). She is also listed among Duke’s leaders in career points (1,761), field goals made (653), field goals attempted (1,283), assists (409) and rebounding average (6.1 rebounds per game).https://miamihurricanes.com/sports/wbball/roster/season/2020-21/coach/katie-meier/

Meier returned to Duke for her senior season in 1990 without missing a beat, earning Kodak/WBCA District 2 All-America and All-ACC first team accolades while being named the Blue Devils’ most valuable player.https://miamihurricanes.com/sports/wbball/roster/season/2020-21/coach/katie-meier/

Currently Katie Meier is the head coach of the Women’s Basketball Program at Miami where she has 277 wins, 22 professional players , 11 postseason berths, 9 20 win seasons , 5 All American honorees, 4 WNBA Draft picks , 1 AP National Coach Of The Year.

Katie Meier completed her 15th season at the helm of the Hurricanes’ women’s basketball program in 2019-20. A well-known and respected figure in women’s basketball with 19 years of head coaching experience, Meier has worked tirelessly to put her mark on Miami’s program and to build a winning tradition.

In her 15 seasons leading the Canes, Meier has amassed nine 20-win seasons and coached the team to 11 postseason appearances, including 10 straight from 2009-2019. Meier is the all-time winningest head coach of Miami women’s basketball by percentage (.617) and the Canes have not finished below .500 since the 2008-09 seasons.

Would Katie Meier leave Coral Gables Florida to return to her college alma mater and become the next head coach of the Duke Women’s Basketball Program?

That question likely won’t get answered but I think this would be a great opportunity for Katie Meier. Why? Because she knows the league. She has played in the league and she is currently a head coach in league and I feel it’s important to factor in that Katie Meier has head coaching experience in one of the toughest conferences in the county because in the Atlantic Coast Conference any team can win or lose on any given night and you’re always going to get the opponents best shot .
