As Duke is playing Wake Forest in Winston -Salem tonight Jon Scheyer is Head Coach.
As a Special Assistant, Assistant Coach, Associate Head Coach at Duke to now retired Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski Jon Scheyer helped spark the Blue Devils to two ACC championships and the 2010 NCAA title as a player from 2007-10, has helped Duke compile a 219-62 (.779) record, a national championship (2015), two Final Fours (2015, 2022) and two ACC Tournament crowns (2017, 2019) during his time as an assistant or associate head coach. He helped mentor Tyus Jones in Duke’s 2015 national title season, as the Blue Devils finished the year ranked third nationally in adjusted offensive efficiency. Jones was named the Final Four Most Outstanding Player in Indianapolis and was a first-round pick in the 2015 NBA Draft after just one college season.
In 2017, Jon Scheyer helped mold Luke Kennard into a consensus All-American after a breakout sophomore season that saw him rank second in the ACC in scoring and three-point field goal percentage. He also helped develop Frank Jackson into one of the most dynamic young guards in the country during the 2016-17 campaign.
Luke Kennard and Frank Jackson were selected 12th and 31st overall, respectively, in the 2017 NBA Draft.
After Grayson Allen finished his career in 2018 as the 12th-leading scorer in Duke history with 1,996 points, he was drafted in the first round by the Utah Jazz. Allen joined Scheyer as two of just five Blue Devils in history with 1,900 or more points, 400 or more rebounds and 400 or more assists (Grant Hill, Danny Ferry, Johnny Dawkins).
The 2019 campaign saw Tyus’ brother Tre enjoy a breakout year as a freshman by setting the program’s single-season record for assist-to-turnover ratio (3.62), while establishing himself as one of the nation’s premier defensive players. Jones’ classmate, RJ Barrett, finished his remarkable freshman season at Duke as a consensus first-team All-American, the USA Today National Player of the Year, and the overall No. 3 selection in the NBA Draft.
R.J. Barrett broke a myriad of program and ACC records, including both the Duke and conference freshman scoring record with 860 points. His 860 points were surpassed on the program’s single-season scoring list by only J.J. Redick’s 964 points as a senior in 2006. Barrett averaged 22.6 points and was the only major conference player in 2018-19 to score 13+ points in every game of the season.
Under Jon Scheyer’s guidance, Tre Jones parlayed his phenomenal freshman season into a decorated sophomore campaign that ended with him as the 2020 ACC Player of the Year, the ACC Defensive Player of the Year, and an All-American. After two seasons as the starting point guard, Jones declared for the NBA Draft, leaving Duke as the program’s career record-holder in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.88) and ranking third in assists per game (5.8).
Throughout the 2021-22 season, Jon Scheyer worked closely with ACC Freshman of the Year and consensus second-team All-American Paolo Banchero. He also helped guide second-team All-ACC pick Wendell Moore Jr., into performing as one of the nation's most complete players. Moore capped his season winning the Julius Erving Award as the nation's best small forward.
Paolo Banchero capped his collegiate career as the overall No. 1 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic, one of a record five Blue Devils drafted in 2022, including four in the first round. In Jon Scheyer’s time at Duke, he has helped mentor 26 Blue Devils to be drafted – 20 being first round selections.

Following Duke’s 82-55 win where they played without Jeremy Roach Head Coach Jon Scheyer who is coaching his inaugural season as Head Coach of Duke had this to say in his opening statement, on giving Tyrese Proctor more responsibility. On where he’s seen the most growth from the team in this recent stretch. On Dariq Whitehead’s overall performance and his overall progress. On if it unusual starting five freshman. On the depth of the team and the performance off the bench.
Good win for us, credit to Coach Craft [Maryland Eastern Shore Head Coach Jason Crafton] and their team and how hard they play. For us it’s 18 assists, 19 turnovers, it wasn’t the prettiest. But overall, our effort was good, different guys really stepped up. Proud of Jaden Schutt, he’s worked, you guys haven’t been able to see it, but he’s worked before practice, after practice, he’s been the best player on every team on any team we scout that we play against, and that’s a role that a lot of big-time players have had here. I was in that role. I’m not suggesting I’m a big-time player by saying that, I understand being in the role. Just proud of him, and credit to him. The first play he made was an offensive rebound; it wasn’t a shot, it wasn’t a three, it was an offensive rebound and that got us going. But a good collective effort, it’s been a heck of a stretch for us, 12 games in 34 days. We have finals now, and we need to figure out how to get better from here.”“Tyrese [Proctor] did a really good job, and that’s his first time being in that role. The thing with him is that he’s really smart, he’s really unselfish, and the next step is just taking what he knows and talking more. I want him to talk more and to use his voice, because he sees things that others don’t or can’t and he really carried the load for us with ball handling responsibilities. Jaylen [Blakes] came in and did a nice job as well. When Jeremy [Roach] comes back we feel like the two of those guyscan play off one another very well.”“For me, I’m proud we’re learning what it takes to win. The talent has been there, the unselfishness has been there. Now it’s the plays, the loose balls, the talking on defense, how to work to get open. All the little details; they’re embracing what they’re seeing and I think their confidence is improving, and our confidence is growing. We have a long way to go and a lot to work on, but I do feel we’re night and day already from who we were to start the year until right now.” Dariq did a good job. For him, he can have some big scoring games, and he can also really impact the game with his versatility. That’s one of the things, watching him in high school. I watched him a lot, whether it be at Montverde or the EYBL circuit and he’s a complete player. Defender, can really pass. I actually thought he could’ve had a couple more assists today, but we didn’tconvert those with him. I want him to get out in transition more, attack the basket and I don’t think he’s shown yet, I think you’ll see soon, just what a defender he can be too. With his size and athleticism he can guard multiple positions. I’ve said it’s been a tough stretch for our team, it’s been a tough stretch for him. He came back at the hardest segment of our season, hasn’t been much practice team. I think for our team these two 10-day breaks between when we play on the 20th and 31st will be important for our team, but it’ll be really important for him. It’ll be his first chance to be healthy, to practice every day, and get a chance to be himself.”“Yes, it does. I don’t think it’s ever happened before, if I’m not mistaken. It’s not something we were trying to do for that reason, it just organically ended up that way. Each of those five guys, they’re talented, they’re bought into the team, and they’re trying to figure it all out. Thought they did a good job out there, we were a little quiet, which is what it’s going to be when you have five freshmen. Proud of their effort and proud of what we did overall. I’m notsurprised. Jaylen [Blakes] and Jake [Jacob Grandison], every game they bring energy. When they go in the game, they may not make every right play, but who does? Jake, you can tell with him, he’s a really calming influence. He’s a great passer, I’ve got to get him where he’s shooting more open shots. He’sreally unselfish, and he just plays hard all the time. Jaylen plays hard all the time and it’sinfectious. I think that’s a contagious trait, when you have a couple of guys who give it everything they have. It translates to the rest of the group, and it was needed today, I’ll tell you that much.”
Though,
Head Coach Jon Scheyer who is coaching his inaugural season as Head Coach of Duke wasn’t the only one to share his thoughts following Duke’s 82-55 win over Maryland Eastern Shore as freshman forward Dariq Whitehead freshman forward Tyrese Proctor was as well.
Freshman forward Dariq Whitehead had this to say on being apart of an all freshman starting five tonight. On Tyrese Proctor getting the start at point guard tonight and how he handled it. On his role evolving.
It felt great. Coming into the game, Coach [Jon Scheyer] told me this was going to be the first time in history that Duke ever had five freshmen starting, and just to know that we came out here and got a W is something that will go down in history. I think [Coach Scheyer telling the team] was more so a motivation thing. I don’t feel like it was to put more pressure on us. I feel like it was more so to motivate us to go out there and do something that’s never been done before. That was the mindset we had coming in – five freshmen, let’s make sure we get the job done.”“I think he handled it very well, especially with Jeremy [Roach] being out. To start as the point guard, Tyrese handled it very well. I feel like overall he did great handling the ball for Jeremy.”[People] are starting to see a lot more of me just getting more comfortable and settling in. I feel like this was a game where things started to get going again. I’m getting my legs back, body getting back in shape, losing weight. The last thing really is now just the mental part. When I get past that, everything will be 100 percent.”
Freshman Tyrese Proctor had this about playing without point guard Jeremy Roach following Duke’s 82-55 win over Maryland Eastern Shore Saturday.
“Jeremy’s a big key for us. Obviously, him being out, it sucks for us, but we just wanted to fight for our brother. I thought the main thing for our starting group tonight was just being vocal, everyone being on the same page, getting stops, and just pushing our offense from our defense.”
On being apart of all freshman Starting five Saturday following Duke’s 82-55 win over Maryland Eastern Shore.
We just wanted to prove a point. We played as hard as we could. All the five freshmen [starting] stuff, we just really wanted to get stops. That’s what we talked about early on, and our offense is going to come. The coaches said that, and we all believe in that. Just being on the same page was one thing that we all spoke about early before the game, everyone being locked in.” “[Maryland Eastern Shore is] a great team. We knew that they were a great team coming into this, obviously watching a lot of film on them. I think a lot of people underestimate them. They’re shorter but they play their butts off. They’re really good on-ball defenders. They got a couple of early tips and then breakaway dunks, but we just tried to minimize that as much as we could, and I think we did that at the back end of the game.

Following Wake Forest 57-81 loss to Rutgers Wake Forest Head Coach Steve Forbes had this to say!
"Congrats to Rutgers, they have a really good basketball team. They physically overwhelmed us, especially at the beginning of the first half and beginning of the second half, that's where the game got out of hand for us. We just weren't strong with the ball and got sped up. They're really elite at stealing the basketball. We knew coming in here that we couldn't have any pickoffs. We gave up five of those in the first half and there's really no way to defend those. We knew coming into the game, we'd have to keep them out of the lane and we didn't do it. They were 44-16 in the paint. I think I had them at 25-for-30 on two's, like 1.75 points-per-possession. That's atrocious. When we kept them outside, they didn't score. We had more turnovers than we had made field goals. You can't win games that way. Credit to them. They rebound 40 percent of the misses most of the time. We did a pretty good job of keeping them off the offensive glass, but they were scoring at such a high rate they didn't get a lot of those opportunities. They have a really great balance on offense, they have some really big wings that are good players. Then, of course, the big boy inside is a really good player. I think Steve Pikiell's got a really nice team and I'm sure they're gonna win a lot of games."
