AJ Griffin scored a career high 27 points. Duke shot 58% and took all drama out of the renewal of the famed rivalry early in both halves, both in building a big lead and then stretching it back out after the Tar Heels had made a run to climb back in it. Then on Saturday North Carolina won 94-81 spoiled Mike Krzyzewski’s final home game inside Cameron Indoor Stadium as the Head Coach of Duke because he is retiring after the 2021-2022 season.

And Jon Scheyer who currently is Mike Krzyzewski’s Associate Head Coach is going to be the Head Coach of Duke beginning in April 2023 while Chris Carrawell is going to be an Associate Head Coach while Nolan Smith is going to be his assistant while Amile Jefferson is also on the coaching staff as Director of player development.

In North Carolina’s spoiling of Mike Krzyzewski’s final home game as Duke’s Head Coach Armando Bacot scored 23 points while his teammate Caleb Love overcame an 0-8 start to shooting started to score 15 of his 22 points after halftime.

Duke, North Carolina are now going to prepare for the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament that is going to be played in Brooklyn New York at the Barclays Center that is home to the Brooklyn Nets of the NBA the New York Liberty of the WNBA!

Duke, North Carolina are both going to open up the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament playing Thursday in the quarterfinals! Duke is going to play the winner of the 8/9 match up between Florida State, Syracuse who play Wednesday in the second round at 12:00pm The game is going to be televised on ESPN!

Duke, Florida State played twice during the regular season splitting the regular season match ups with each team winning on their home court.

Duke won 88- 70 on Saturday February 19, 2022 in Durham!

Why?

Freshman Paolo Banchero led the way with 17 points – 13 in the second half – to go with eight rebounds as the Blue Devils (23-4, 13-3 ACC) picked up their ninth win in the last 10 games. After the teams traded baskets over the first 12 minutes, senior Joey Bakercame off the bench and knocked down a season-high 4-of-5 three-pointers to help Duke close the first half on a 12-2 run and head into the break with a double-digit lead.

Duke would not let the Seminoles (14-12, 7-9 ACC) get closer than eight the rest of the way. Junior Wendell Moore Jr., had a hand in every facet of the game, finishing with 16 points, five boards, seven assists and six steals, while freshman Trevor Keelsdished out a game-high eight dimes. Fellow rookie AJ Griffin went for 15 points and sophomore Mark Williams continued his string of high efficiency from the field with a 5-of-7 shooting night for 10 points and six rebounds.

While Florida State won in overtime 79-78 in Tallahassee on January 18, 2022!

Why?

 RayQuan Evans made two free throws with 12 seconds remaining and John Butler blocked a jump shot by Wendell More, Jr., with two seconds remaining, and Florida State won its NCAA record 13th consecutive overtime decision with a 79-78 win over No. 5 Duke at the Donald L. Tucker Center.

Caleb Mills led the Seminoles with 18 points, while Butler added a career-high 14.

The Seminoles outscored the Blue Devils by a 12-11 margin in the overtime period to win their 13th consecutive overtime game.  The Seminoles’ overtime winning streak dates back to a 101-90 double overtime win over Syracuse on January 13, 2018.  Florida State has defeated 11 different teams during the overtime streak with its win over Duke marking its first over the Blue Devils during the streak. 

The win was Florida State head coach Leonard Hamilton’s eighth all-time win over Duke.  The win was also the Seminoles’ first over a top-5 ranked team since a 69-69 win over Virginia on March 15, 2019 in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament. 

Florida State gained its first win over a nationally ranked opponent this season and snapped a five-game losing streak to the Blue Devils.

The Seminoles started the second half in a 38-33 hole at half but turned it around at the under 16-minute media timeout to lead by a 44-34 margin. 

Sophomore Naheem McLeod started for the second time in his season and finished with a near a double-double with a career-high nine points and 10 rebounds.

However, it was Mills and Butler who led the way for the Seminoles.  Mills contributed 18 points, two blocks, and two steals, while Butler had a career-high 14 points and blocked two shots for Florida State. Mills made two triples and was a perfect six of six from the free throw line.

The Seminoles were up 63-58 at the under four-minute media timeout in the second half, but Duke’s Mark Williams scored four points in 1:28 to put the Blue Devils up 67-65. Evans made a layup with one second remaining in regulation, and Mills stole the ball back as the clock expired.

Mills opened up the extra period with a three-point shot. He scored eight of Florida State’s 12 points in the overtime period.

Duke was up by one after two made free throws from Paolo Banchero, but Evans was fouled with 12 seconds remaining to put the Seminoles up for good. 

Florida State had a season-low five turnovers and outrebounded Duke by a 42-37 margin. The Seminoles’ bench also gained the upper hand this evening with 23 points compared to Duke’s 13 points. Freshman Matthew Cleveland led Florida State’s bench with eight points and six rebounds. He is the ACC leader in scoring (10.5 ppg) amongst all players who have not started a game this season.

With nine steals for Florida State in comparison to just two steals from Duke, the Seminoles continue to be the top ranked team in the ACC for steals with 154 steals and a 9.6 steals per game average.  The Seminoles lead the ACC in both total steals and steals per game.

Duke’s Banchero led the Blue Devils in all three major categories with 20 points, 12 rebounds, and seven assists.

Duke swept Syracuse in the regular season winning the first game in Durham on January 22, 2022 79-59 where they hit 14 three-pointers – including five from freshman AJ Griffin was one of four players for Duke (15-3, 5-2 ACC) with 15 points, joining classmate Paolo Banchero, junior Wendell Moore Jr. and sophomore Mark Williams. Banchero had 13 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season.
Griffin swished three-pointers on his first two shots to spark Duke's 11-2 run out of the gate. Syracuse surged back with a 13-5 stretch but never took the lead.

A 24-11 run from the Blue Devils to start the second half extended their lead to 27, with Moore tallying 10 points during that span. Duke grew its lead to 31 points during the second half.

Senior Joey Baker had 11 points and sophomore Jeremy Roach dished out a career-high nine assists for Duke. Moore had eight assists of his own as the Blue Devils tied their season high with 25 dimes on 30 made field goals.

Then winning the rematch at Syracuse 97-72 on Saturday January 22nd, 2022!

In Duke’s 97-72 win at Syracuse Mark Williams scored a career-high 28 points, freshman Paolo Banchero contributed AJ Griffin added 20Duke (25-4, 15-3 ACC) maintained sole possession of first place in the conference with a dominant wire-to-wire performance. The Blue Devils also won their seventh consecutive road game, extending the longest active streak by a Power 5 team.

Banchero had career highs in assists (nine) and three-pointers (four) while Griffin hit 6-of-10 from deep as Duke finished .469 (15-of-32) behind the arc. Williams added 12 rebounds – eight on the offensive glass – for his seventh double-double of the year.

Buddy Boeheim led Syracuse (15-14, 9-9 ACC) with 23 points, while Joe Girard netted 18. After Duke shot out to a 14-0 lead in the game's opening four minutes and extended the lead to 30 later in the first half, the Orange were never able to cut the deficit below 15.

Banchero and Griffin had 18 and 14 in the first half, respectively, combining to hit 8-of-11 three-pointers. The Blue Devils shot 18-of-30 (.600) and 10-of-17 (.588) from behind the arc in the period.

Meanwhile, Syracuse lost both match ups of the regular season with Duke on the road and at home?

They lost lost on the road 79-59 in Durham on January 22, 2022 because Duke's AJ Griffin put the first points on the board with a 3-pointer and the Blue Devils never trailed in the encounter.

Then they lost at home to Duke on Saturday February 26, 2022 72-79.

Why?

North Carolina took the lead for good five minutes into the game on a Bacot bucket but only led by six, 31-25, at halftime.

The teams were close in shooting percentage but North Carolina was 11 of 25 from the arc while Virginia was 6 of 12. With Bacot leading the way, UNC won the boards 36-28.

North Carolina has held opposing teams to 65 points or fewer in its last eight wins. Virginia came in 10th nationally in scoring defense at 57.7.

North Carolina Louisville met twice during the regular season!

Once in Louisville Kentucky once in Chapel Hill North Carolina and they won both match ups!

Why?

North Carolina swept Louisville in the regular season because they won 90-83 in overtime in Louisville Kentucky on February 1, 2022 because in the final 1:10 was highlighted by a pair of technical fouls against Louisville that led to four made foul shots for North Carolina to seal the win.

Jae'Lyn Withers was whistled for a dead ball contact technical foul when officials ruled he shoved Bacot to the floor after the whistle blew when Bacot and Louisville's Matt Cross got tied up for a loose ball with 1:10 left. Caleb Love sank the technicals for an 86-81 North Carolina lead.

Noah Locke responded with two foul shots for the Cardinals with 59 seconds to go to reduce the deficit to three. North Carolina turned it over, and on the Cardinal's ensuing possession, Cross' deep, straight-on 3 attempt hit the rim and ricocheted to the left baseline. On the bounce, however,

Louisville's Syndey Curry was called for an offensive foul boxing out Bacot. In his irate response, Cardinals interim head coach Mike Pegues was called for a technical foul upon slamming his hand on the scorer's table.

North Carolina swept Georgia Tech in the regular season because they won at Georgia Tech on December 5, 2022 by a score of 79-62.

Why?

RJ Davis scored 13 of his game-high 23 points in the second half Sunday afternoon as North Carolina pulled away in the second half to defeat Georgia Tech 79-62 in the ACC opener for both teams.

The game was tied 31-all at halftime, after UNC (6-2) overcame a nine-point deficit behind stingy defense. Georgia Tech (5-3) lost its second straight contest as senior guard Michael Devoe, who entered the game as the nation's leading scorer with a 25-point average, was limited to 13 points on 5 of 12 shooting.

Freshman guard Deebo Coleman scored 13 points for Tech, which also got 13 from senior wingman Khalid Moore.

North Carolina won with balance. Four players finished with double-figure scoring, including Caleb Love with with 17 points and Armando Bacot who pitched in with 15 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Georgia Tech was the better team for much of the first half.
Georgia Tech built a a nine-point lead on a steal and dunk by Moore with 8:43 remaining, but North Carolina outscored the Jackets 17-8 from there to even the score by halftime.

Armando Bacot tied his career high with 29 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, RJ Davis scored 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting, and North Carolina cruised to a 88-65 win over Georgia Tech on Saturday night.

Bacot made 10 of 16 from the field and 9 of 9 from the free-throw line while Davis had six assists and hit four 3-pointers. Caleb Lovemade three 3s and finished with 14 points and Brady Manek added 11 points for North Carolina (12-4, 4-1 Atlantic Coast Conference).

Davis hit a 3-pointer to open the scoring and another to cap a 10-2 opening run and the Tar Heels never trailed. Davis hit two more 3s — and Manek added a 3-pointer and a traditional three-point play — in a 16-3 spurt that made it 42-24 with 2:23 left in the first half. Bacot converted back-to-back three-point plays and then made a layup in a 50-second span to give North Carolina a 32-point lead, its biggest of the game, with 9:29 left.

Jordan Usher led Georgia Tech (7-9, 1-5) with 22 points and Deivon Smith scored 16. The duo combined to make 16 of 27 from the field but the rest of the team shot just 34% (11 of 32).
