Michael Savarino isn’t just another Duke Basketball player! He’s former Duke Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s grandson and he is transferring after playing his Freshman, Sophomore, Junior seasons at Duke.

As a freshman at Duke in 2019-2020,

As a sophomore at Duke in 2020-2021, Michael Savarino

Made his career debut at North Carolina (3/6) and logged one minute of action

• Scored his first career point on a free throw while bringing down a rebound and recording an assist in the ACC Tournament win over Boston College (3/9)

  As a junior at Duke in 2021-2022,

  Michael Savarino averaged 1.1 , 0.5 rebounds , 0.0 assists while shooting 40%

  Though that wasn’t all that happened during his junior season at Duke as he also had off the hardwood problems as he was arrested on Driving While Intoxicated charges Sunday morning after a stop sign violation and ensuing breathalyzer test showed blood alcohol content of 0.08 that is the legal limit in North Carolina while driving a white 2017 Jeep SUV that was registered to then his freshman teammate Paolo Banchero who was a passenger in the back seat.

  Michael Savarino had this to say about Duke after deciding he is transferring!

  Duke University means more to me then I could ever express.

  It has also been my dream to play basketball for my grandfather at this special place . This experience has been more impactful than I could ever imagined. There have been incredible highs and profound lows , but I have learned from everything and become a better man from it all. This year has been nothing short of special and I am grateful to have been apart of this journey. This summer I will be finishing my degree in sociology and entering my name into the transfer portal as I pursue the opportunity to earn a graduate degree elsewhere . Thank you to my teammates, coaches , family and most importantly the Duke Community and Cameron Crazies. Duke University will forever be home.
