Following Head Coach Jon Scheyer who is coaching his inaugural season as Head Coach had this to say for his Opening Statement. On teams health and how frustrating it is to be down players: On whether using lots of different lineups will help later in the season: On whether if he sensed this type of performance might happen. On what the team was missing defensively overall.

“Well first of all, credit to Wake. They outplayed us. They were the hungrier team and I thought their sense of urgency coming off their game on Saturday, you could really tell, and for us, we didn't have that. They outrebounded us. I thought the free throws were key, you know, they got to the free throw line, they made 22 out of 26. That's on us. They drove the ball stronger than we did and we probably fouled a few times when we shouldn't have, but credit them. All the credit in the world goes to them. We have time now to regroup and address the things we need to do better and obviously there's a lot of them, but credit to Wake. I thought that experience, playing on the road, hurt us. For a lot of our guys it's their first time going through it but credit to them.”“Well, we’ve been healthy (injury-wise). It’s we got sick. It’s how it goes. It’s how it goes. Other teams go through it, and it’s not ideal of course. You look at that time from when you had exams but also leading up to this game practice time, we didn’t have our group together. But we did have this group. We still should have done better. I should’ve coached them better and all that. But it’s how it goes.”

“I think all this helps. Being in this environment, playing shorthanded, we played without our full team in about half our games or whatever it is. You have to keep perspective but you also have to hate the result. That’s part of what makes you a competitor, whether it’s as a coach or as a player. And so for us, I think it’s important understanding the room we have to grow and we just have to keep going. And also we need to address the things that we need to cut out now because there’s a sense of urgency. In the ACC, you have to win these games. You have to come back and win against Florida State. You have to win on the road. And so for us, I think it’s that balance. But being in this environment, playing in the games leading up to this have been really valuable for us.” No. Well, we knew the circumstances were different for us. I mean, having a 10-day break, and another 11-day break, we haven’t, that wasn’t necessarily by plan if it wasn’t just how it worked out this year with the way our schedule was. But for us, I thought we would be ready to go. We’ve have a lot of first this year. And this was our first road game. And I thought we were, when we missed some shots, we were a little, that impacted our defense and taken aback by it. And we can’t be that fragile. We need to be toughminded and defend, which is who we’ve been most of the year. So for me, I think it’s a great chance to really look at everything and go back to the drawing board and address the team when we come back and make a plan to move forward. But it’s disappointing obviously to lose this one.”Our defense has always started with guarding the ball. And they just drove us like crazy, you know. They do a good job of moving and spacing, and they just got in our paint at will. We just need to be solid and guard the ball. You know, it’s hard, you’re playing out of rotations really the whole game with that. It starts there, obviously you can miss Dereck [Lively’s] rim protection. Him just being out there, changes the game. But Ryan [Young], I thought he really battled, what he did. We didn’t give him the ball enough. He basically, he almost had a double-double, Jaylen Blakes really guarded and gave us great energy. We have to play like those two guys did tonight. And I thought they set a great example. But we need everybody to play that way.”

On how much of an emphasis Wake Forest size was and how they tried to neutralize it.

“It’s inexcusable. It’s toughness and it’s effort. It’s not much else that goes into rebounding and we know that we take pride in that being a strength of ours. And it was embarrassing that we couldn’t win that tonight. And as Coach [Scheyer] mentioned, it was all effort and they out-toughed us and they came out right from the jump and they wanted it more than us.”“They were able to get in our paint pretty easily and that’s something that we’ve been able to do successfully in the past is come out and guard teams and take guys out of their games. And they were able to get to the free throw line very easily against us and get into the paint and maneuver. And again, it’s just offensively things come and go, but defense has to be a thing that remains stable for us across the board no matter how we’re playing, how we’re shooting the ball, our defense can’t waver. So again, I think the first thing, they got to the free throw line very easily and they were able to get into the paint.”“They’re a pretty different team than what we’ve played so far and they’ve a lot of key guys. We knew that Appleby, coming in, he was a really good distributor. I think he finished with eight assists tonight. Obviously he’s a good player and they were able to get a few lobs like that and obviously they beat us in the rebounding battle, but I didn’t think, we’ve played against big teams, I don’t think size has affected us too much in the past. I think truly it was just that we came out lethargic tonight, they jumped on us, and we never could dig ourselves out of the hole that we put ourselves in in the first half. Keeps on coming back to effort and not wanting it as much tonight.”

“Really proud of our team and our effort. We had a tough loss on Monday night and to have a really good week of preparation, we felt Georgia Tech’s a dangerous team, especially at home. And I thought it was probably the best collectively on defense that we’ve played. And then on the offensive end, to share the ball and get 24 assists, to hold them to 43 and then have 24 assists, really proud of this group and how we responded. Especially when we face adversity. I thought Jeremy [Roach] played just an incredibly solid game, and when’s he ready to shoot like that, he’s heard me say it all the time, I think every shot he shoots is going in. Him and Tyrese [Proctor] had really good control over our team and just proud of the effort. Need to keep building, every game is tough and to get a win here is a great step and back to work tomorrow.”“I think the biggest thing for us, we’ve done that in spurts throughout the year, we haven’t done it for 40 minutes of a game. And with every single one of our guys, it doesn’t come from a selfish place or trying to do it just on your own, it’s knowing what to do and for us, we spend a lot of time in key stretches – I thought the stretch where they cut it to seven in the first half, we’ve talked about segments of games, for us we felt it was a really important segment. Because it can either be tied at half, it can be a three, four-point game, or we can extend it. Again, do you think it’s going to be 18, that’s not necessarily what you’re talking about but to push it to 18 is a big deal. So for us, it’s watching film, we had some really competitive practices where we’re just learning how to get to the next action. If that’s not there, let’s say we call a play, what to do next? Where, for a lot of our guys, they haven’t had to do that. Proud of them learning, proud of them blocking out any noise, just focusing on getting better every day. It thought it really translated today with our offense.You know, I had a year to get ready for this. It’s different when you’re in it. For us, we’ve literally returned, it’s the youngest team ever, in Duke history. And so for us, the way that we’ve responded to a loss or a setback this year, that’s what our program is all about. And the only way you do that is if you hate the outcome. There’s no moral victories, there’s no part of me that was happy after losing to Virginia Tech but I’ve also seen with our group how we’ve gotten better. There’s no question we’re better than we were a month ago, or two months ago. And this league is really tough. It can expose you, especially on the road, and I think that’s been a big adjustment for us. But my thing has really been staying present, controlling what we can control, getting better every day, and I believe in this group. While also at the same time understanding the areas we have to get better at.”Talking about getting better, Tyrese from the start of the season to now has just grown tremendously. And we’re at our best when Tyrese is doing this. And we have weapons on the floor and I thought he put them in a great position to be really successful. I’m not positive, but I think a couple of Jeremy [Roach’s] three’s were from Tyrese. I don’t know how many, whether it’s two or three, but Jeremy, you’re asking him the question about carrying the load for the most part of the year, he hasn’t had anybody necessarily make him better. And Tyrese can do that. So what he’s done, distributing the ball, he competes and defends all the time, that’s an added element for us that’s made us a lot better.“Yeah, that was great, let’s see if we can do it again. That was great. I think it was part of how the game went and you know, for Dereck [Lively II], that’s been something he’s had to work through. I thought he did a great job of playing without his hands, not putting his hands on guys. We need him in the game, but we’ll see if we can do that again coming up.”

Okay that obviously was not a good game. Give Duke total credit, they just kicked our rear end. Their size was overwhelming for us and we got in stretches where we couldn’t score and it just spirals. It just spiraled and went downhill fast. Last ofur minutes of that first half and the start of the second half, we just couldn’t score again. Just couldn’t score. Felt there were some times where we can usually score over guys, like Jalon Moore can get a shot over his guys, I felt like we were really small in a lot of areas. So credit to Duke and just that wasn’t a good game for us.”“Yeah. I felt we looked small out there, just size wise I thought we were really small. [Kyle] Filipowski, [Dereck] Lively, Filipowski for sure is going to be a high draft pick and probably Lively as well too, or at least projected to be at least somewhere in the first round. Obviously, we tried to recruit the heck out of Ryan Young and so we were just small. Even the perimeter, even the wings, we were small. I thought Mark Mitchell, theirthree-man, was biggerthan ourcenter. I just thought we were small, and it wasjust overwhelming at times. And we tried to play small to give us some things offensively but they were able to just stay at home on the perimeter and just try to play volleyball at the rim with some our drives down there and things just kind of spiraled.

On Duke’s Defensive effort. “Us sharing the ball, that gives us confidence. And then when you see other people share the ball, that makes you want to share the ball. When you know a shot’s coming, when you know the ball’s coming to you, you’re going to be more prepared for the shot, more ready for the shot and also you’re probably going to make the shot. So, just being ready on the catch … and keep sharing, keep moving, keep getting paint touches, second and third drive and kicks, I think that’s big for us.”“Just kind of wanted to have the big men set the tone [Georgia Tech is] kind of smaller inside, so we wanted to get them going early and I think we did. Towards the end of the first half, they really got going and we brought the lead up to, I think, 18. So, that helped us a lot“Like I said earlier, when that ball’s popping and everybody is touching it, then everybody feels like they’re in the game and everybody feels like they can make a shot. So, if we get first and second drive and kicks, stuff like that, and guys are ready for open kicks and they’re ready to shoot the ball, it’s fun playing like that. And when you’re making shots and winning like this, it’s very fun.”“Definitely we have a lot of takeaways from the [Virginia Tech] game. But just overall, we wanted to focus on ourselves, moving the ball, getting back to what we do, moving the ball, getting stops on defense. I think in the [Virginia Tech] game, we got a little too stagnant so getting guys moving on the offensive end, I think that was a big thing for why we had success today.”

Following Wake Forest 79-77 lost to NC State Wake Forest Head Coach Steve Forbes had this to say about about NC State forward DJ Burns! '

31,13, 48 as I look at the box score. 31 points by DJ Burns, it was an unbelievable performance by him. 13 offensive rebounds and 48 points in the second half. Those were the tales of the tape to me of how we lost the game. There were four keys going into the game that we had to do well. We had to do well in transition defense, which we did pretty much the entire game except for the last play in the first half, which is just a really poor play on our part. To go down and really not execute what we were supposed to do offensively, then come down and run away from the guy, they left him wide open for three, that was poor. Our ball screen defense was really good. We changed just over and over because we were trying to help our bigs and today we were in the drop, which means the bigs were way off the screen and our guards had to get over and get back and force tough twos. That way we didn't have to help on the roll. We could be out on the shooters so they couldn't play across the midline like Pitt did and we did a good job on that, but when there's tough twos then there's tough rebounds. You have to get those rebounds and that leads to those offensive rebounds.

The third thing was guarding the post, we knew that coming in. We watched film after film after film on this guy and he can pass. He's a great passer, so they just shot a three one time and we're not doing that. We knew going in we had to guard him and you have to make him go right. You have to make him shoot it over you, body between, and we did a good job of that in the first half. Second half we did not. The fourth thing was rebounds. When they average more than 10 offensive rebounds a game they win, and they got 13. It's a two-point game and those things come back to haunt you.

A lot of credit to DJ, he played well. I've coached against him before when he was at Winthrop, so it wasn't news to me. A big play for us was when we finally just put Damari on him to try to get him to pass it. Damari did and then he threw it out and we should have stolen the ball, but Terquavion made a really tough runner to kind of give them a little breather. After we called a timeout we had good looks, but giving up 48 points in the second half is not a winning play."
