Why Duke Guard Jeremy Roach Is Different From Other Duke Players

When the fans, the media, spectators think about Duke the first thing that likely comes to mind is the one and done era because following their freshman seasons a player or players declare for the NBA Draft and don’t use the collegiate eligibility they have left .

This past season in Duke Head Coach Jon Scheyer’s rookie season as Duke Head Coach a pair of freshman entered their names in the 2023 NBA Draft in Dereck Lively II, Dariq Whitehead.

Dereck Lively II was selected in the first round of 2023 NBA Draft as 12th by Oklahoma City before being traded to Dallas Mavericks.

Dariq Whitehead was selected in the first round as the 22nd pick by the Brooklyn Nets.

While Dereck Lively II, Dariq Whitehead declared for the 2023 NBA Draft Jeremy Roach who then was junior guard for Duke also entered his name in the 2023 NBA Draft while maintaining his collegiate eligibility. Following going through the NBA Draft process Jeremy Roach eventually announced that he would return to Duke for his senior season by saying on social media (x) formally known as Twitter Duke nation I’m not done yet year 4….

That is rare as the majority of players who come to Duke enter there names in the NBA Draft following their freshman, sophomore, junior seasons though that isn’t the course guard Jeremy Roach chose to take as he chose to come back for his senior season be a 2x captain to lead the 2023-2024 team that is going to include freshman guard Jared McCain, freshman guard Caleb Foster junior guard Jaylen Blakes, sophomore guard freshman forwards TJ Power, Sean Stewart sophmore guard Jaden Schutt , sophomre center Christian Reeves sophmore forward Mark Mitchell, sophmore center Kyle Filipowski, junior center Stanley Borden, senior guard Spencer Hubbard along with Tyrese Proctor, Ryan Young who are also captains.

As a freshman for Duke in 2020-2021 season Jeremy Roach Played in all 24 games and made 18 starts in his rookie season

  • Averaged 8.7 points per game on 78-of-172 (.453) shooting and 26-of-84 (.310) three-point shooting

  • Ranked second on the team with 66 assists (2.8 per game)

  • Started 15 of 18 games in ACC play while averaging 9.1 points and 2.5 assists
