Who is Will Avery?

Former Duke player, NBA player recent Duke graduate who was hired by Duke Head Coach Jon Scheyer to be an Assistant Coach.

As a freshman at Duke in 1997-1998 as a sophomore in 1998-1999,

William Avery who was a guard played 74 games averaged 11.9 points, 2.8 rebounds , 3.8 assists per game where he was NCAA All-Region 1999 All-ACC Tourney before being drafted by Minnesota in first round of the 1999 NBA Draft as the 14th overall pick. For Minnesota he played three seasons. 1999-2000, 2000-2001, 2001 -2002 where he played in 142 games averaged 2.7 points , 0.7 rebounds, 1.4 assists.

William Avery graduated from Duke recently with his undergraduate degree in African American Studies while assisting Duke for the previous four seasons while completing his undergraduate degree in African American Studies.

He has been a tremendous asset for our staff over the last several years after returning to Duke to complete his undergraduate degree – and what a testament to return 20 years later and achieve that. William Avery hiring as Duke Assistant Coach comes following new NCAA rules went into effect July 1 that included the addition of two full-time on-court coaching positions in men's basketball.

Duke Head Coach Jon Scheyer’s new Assistant Coach who is replacing Amile Jefferson who is now an Assistant Coach for Joe Mazulla, Boston of NBA.

Emanual Didly is familiar with Duke in some way because he was an Assistant Coach for former Duke player, guard former Duke Assistant Coach Duke Associate Head Coach current Northwestern Head Coach Chris Collins for three seasons where he was known as one of the nation’s top recruiters, he was instrumental in building the highest-rated recruiting class in Northwestern history, which included a pair of top-100 signees in the 2021 class before joining Porter Moser’s coaching staff at Oklahoma as an Assistant Coach on April 16, 2021.

While Assistant Coach at Northwestern for Chris Collins. Emanuael Dildy had the opportunity to coach Ryan Young who currently is a center for Duke who attended Northwestern when he was redshirted his freshman season. In 2019-20, 2020 -2021. Emanuel Didly is going to reunited with him as Ryan Young is going to be using his sixth year of eligibility in 2023 -2024.

On August 8, 2023 on The Brotherhood Podcast Duke Head Coach Jon Scheyer’s new Assistant Coach who replaced Amile Jefferson Emanuel Didly was interviewed by former Northwestern Center, Current Duke Center Ryan Young about his coaching career including his coaching career at Northwestern where he coached the host of The Brotherhood Podcast Ryan Young where he coached with former Duke guard Duke coach Chris Collins, current Northwestern Head Coach Chris Collins as well as his coaching career at Oklahoma where he coached former Duke guard Jordan Goldwire as a red shirt senior in 2021 -2022 as Oklahoma got Jordan Goldwire as a graduate transfer.
