Following Duke losing Dariq Whitehead to left lower leg injury in second half going to lose inaugural meeting of 2022-2023 regular season to Virginia Tech 77-75 Head Coach Jon Scheyer who is coaching his inaugural season as Duke Head Coach had this to say for his opening statement on what challenges Grant Basile presented Duke’s Bigs, On the last possession Duke had where Tyrese Proctor had open three what he was looking for on that play. On Filipowski (Kyle) getting hit in the throat on the last play and his mind set. On if there was anything on defense Duke was hoping to do better that didn’t happen. On the extent of Dariq Whitehead’s injury. He had a great look from the wing, and that wasn’t even necessarily the play. We wanted the ball in [Kyle Filipowski’s] hands, good things happen, really almost every time he touched it we get either a wide open shot or he got a great look himself. And he made a read, made a really good pass to Tyrese [Proctor], they happened to get caught up on that initial action. And we’ll take that any day of the week. Tyrese is wide open, it hits back rim, it’s right there. And sometimes it goes in and sometimes it doesn’t. But we were looking to the put the ball in Flip’s hands.”can tell you, in that play, he got hit so hard that he was throwing up in the huddle. He was full-out throwing up, and he wasn’t about to be out for a second. He was ready to come back in, and we ended up drawing up the play, and put the ball in his hands and we just missed the shot. That’s what happened right before, and he’s a big-time warrior, man. He’s a competitor. He hates to lose, I thought you could see that tonight. He really put us on his back and willed us to put us in a position to win that game.”“They’re a tough team to play, period, but especially on a one-day turnaround. They have so many actionsthey run, they cutso hard, they screen hard. And then Hunter [Cattoor], you don’t have a lot of film on him to show our guys. We know him well, he had seven threes against us in the ACC Championship last year but he’s a big-time player. He changes their team in a huge way because of his threat, the way he moves without the ball, he puts a lot of pressure on your defense. Too many times we got caught without talking. You have to talk really well on switches, when they screen and they get all of these zoom actions. But I thought in the second half, we really dug down, held them to 33 points and did a better job. And they still, they almost shot 50 [percent] from the field. They had one of those nights. They just made a lot of shots too.” On the extent of Dariq Whitehead’s injury: “Haven’t even talked to our medical team yet. He felt something he was jumping there. I need to get some clarity. I don’t know timetable, I don’t know what we’ll do other than get him back, evaluate him and go from there.

Though,

Duke Head Coach Jon Scheyer wasn’t the only coach to share his thoughts following Duke’s 78-75 loss to Virginia Tech in Blacksburg Monday as Virginia Tech Head Coach Mike Young did as well on Virginia Tech’s performance on why Virginia Tech shot so well.

We’re kind of throwing things against the wall in hopesthat we find something that we can get our teeth in. And thatcan sometimes be difficult with our ability to switch. They don’t want to switch with [Ryan] Young and [Dereck] Lively. They will with h Lively, some. They want to keep it man-on-man with their length. And those are really good basketball players. We score 78 in here, make 10 three’s, Hunter Cattoor looked like Hunter Cattoor again, he’s been good, he was good at UVA, I can’t play without him, fellas. [Sean] Pedulla had his best game, by far, in quite some time. He’s a floor general, he had one bad shot in transition, but he played a good basketball game for us. [Grant] Basile was terrific, maybe his best. He was awfully good in here against Dayton, he’s having a good year for us, but he belonged on that floor. Asserted himself, was aggressive, took them into the post a couple of times and bang, bang, got to the charge circle and got up over his left shoulder and got a couple down. He was really good. Really proud of Grant.”not really sure how to answer that. We looked awfully comfortable. Good lord, we’re down 7-0. We had a good rhythm. Pedulla got a bomb down in front of Duke’s bench there during that stretch. The ball had energy, our spacing was quite good, playing the game the way the thing’s supposed to be played. We haven’t done that very well here over the last little bit.

Though,

Head Coaches from both Duke, Virginia Tech weren’t the only ones to share their thoughts following Duke’s 78-75 loss to Virginia Tech in Blacksburg as Duke players did as well.

Those players included junior guard Jeremy Roach, freshman center Kyle Filipowski!

Jeremy Roach shared his thoughts on what it meant for the team to come back from halftime deficit and be in position to win. On what the team needs to do better to win games like this in the future. On if was happy with the last position. On how he felt about Dariq Whitehead’s injury.

It just shows the fight that we have. It shows the potential of our team and how we’ve been growing over the season. We fought hard, we dug ourselves into a hole for sure in the first half. We just let guys get open threes, and all that kind of stuff, so we kind of put it on ourselves. But that’s the fight that we need all 40 minutes, we can’t just do it for one half, we’ve got to do it for all 40.”“I mean, it’s not even offensively. We let them score 70, 70-something points? We’ve got to just double down on defense and get stops. It came down to a one possession game, it was tied up with 30 seconds left, so we’ve just got to get that last stop.”“I would’ve been happy with anybody, Tyrese shooting that shot. I mean, he got an open look, so I’ve got all the confidence in the world for him to hit that shot.”“It hurts because he’s been there for us. He’s had some big-time moments for us. We wanted to get this win for him, for sure. But just praying that he’s okay and he’ll have a speedy recovery.”

Kyle Filipowski shared his thoughts on getting caught in the throat late in the game. On wasn’t working defensively in the first half.

Yeah, he just elbowed me right in my adam’s apple, and Icouldn’t breathe for a minute. So I just needed to throw up and I was good. … as a team, we’re just working our butts off and that’s a game we should totally come out with a win. It just hurts because I know we’re working super hard, we’re getting all this backlash from everyone, but that’sjust bringing uscloser. It’s hard because you hate losing and I think this team is really special.”“I think it was just the giving up too many three-point opportunities. There was a lot of, I wouldn’t say miscommunication between the guards and the bigs off their zoom actions, but they just executed it really well. We adapted to it in the second half and did a much better job with it. That was a little x’s-and-o’s that we could’ve taken care of better in the first half.

Jacob Grandison was 0-3 on field goals , 0-2 on 3 pointers 4 rebounds, 4 assists , 0 turnovers 2 points.

As a team as Duke sustained 81-59 loss to 19th ranked Miami Monday in Miami Gardens Florida Duke had 21 turnovers.

Following Duke sustaining 81-59 loss to 19th ranked Miami Monday in Miami Gardens Florida Jon Scheyer had this to say for his opening statement. On what he saw after 21 turnovers, missed close shots. On what he thinks about playing on the road in Atlantic Coast Conference play. On how tough it is to reset after North Carolina game, travel and then play against a tough Miami team. On what stood out to him about Miami.

So first of all, congratulations to Miami. There’s a reason they haven’t lost here at home. They’re really good. They obviously had it clicking on all cylinders right away. And for us, we had a different look. Even the games, we’ve lost games on the road, we’ve been right there. Playing at Clemson, at Virginia Tech. We win the last one at Georgia Tech. And for us, it wasn’t the same level ofcompeting, and the same look. And so that’s on me, on our guys, on our team. It’s disappointing, not okay with it. Not taking any credit away from them. They won; they beat us. No excuses. No excuses on our end. We’ll figure out where to go and how to improve from here. But disappointing for me.” On what he saw on offense after 21 turnovers, missed close shots. It starts with the turnovers, right? If you give any team, but a team as good as Miami, 21 turnovers and just layups and dunks in transition, it’s going to be a heck of a night for you. And some of them they were aggressive and got in the passing lanes, other times we just lost the ball. I mean literally lost the ball. And that’s going to make it really difficult. And then you add in the offensive rebounds, second-chance points – we’ve been a team that’s protected our paint. And those are the two things against these guys you have to do really well. And obviously we didn’t execute that. On what he thinks has been the challenge about playing on the road in conference play. “I don’t know. I mean, for us, end of the day, you’re playing ball no matter where you are. If it’s neutral, road, home. Do I think the Cameron Crazies and Cameron Indoor Stadium helps us? Absolutely. It’s the best place to play college basketball. But for us, throughout my time here, we go on the road and we love it. There’s the white-out here tonight and that’s what it should be. That’s what it is. And so for us, you do it by competing, you do it by being really together. The start that we got off to, we were trying to get it all back at once. And it’s not going to go against a team like them. You can’t get it back at once. You have to really work hard. And then look, for us, you miss a lot of bunnies and they made all of theirs. Tip your hat to them for some of those, but that’s on us with the focus you need to have. Especially on a quick turnaround.“It’s tough. It’s not easy. But it’s what you have to do. And end of the day, they played Saturday too. And so, there’s no excuses. That’s part of playing in the ACC. That’s part of playing big-time college basketball. If we’re able to, we have to earn our way there, and we have many games to win and to go, but if you have a chance to play in March, you’re playing a Thursday-Saturday game. You’re playing a Friday-Sunday game. So it’s part of growing up and learning how to prepare the same way – no matter who you’re playing, no matter where the game is at. And that’s what this game was all about. It wasn’t about as much about executing. To me it was about the focus, the fight, the energy. To come out against a really good team, we have two road games this week against two of the best teams in our league. It’s a great opportunity. But you have to come out at the same level no matter where you are.“Just how ready to play they were. They’re explosive. You can talk about their lack of size, they’re strong. They’re experienced. They really know how to play. They play both ends of the ball and offensively, they spread you out. They can hurt you from every position. And they know who they are. They’ve been in a lot of games together but they’ve been in a lot of games with the experience they have in college. We knew it was going to be a tough game, no matter what, but you have to take care of the ball and protect our paint.

Though,

Jon Scheyer wasn’t the only from Duke to share his thoughts about Duke’s 81-59 loss as Duke players in junior guard Jeremy Roach, freshman forward Kyle Filipowski did as well. Jeremy Roach shared his thoughts on Miami’s energy impacting the game. On how he felt early in the game with slow offensive start . On the difference how he feels off the court tonight compared to after North Carolina win. “I mean, we had 21 turnovers. That was pretty much, that’s the game right there. If you give the ball away 21 times, the other team is probably going to win.“We’ve just got to be more together. When we get down, we can’t just go one-on-one, we can’t play hero ball, we’ve got to move it. Play inside out and just do what we have been all season. Obviously, Miami did a good job of making it tough for us, but we put that on ourselves for sure.”“Just next game. We can’t harp on this game, we can’t harp on what we did on Saturday. We’ve got to just get back to work this week and take care of UVA on Saturday.”

Freshman forward Kyle Filipowski shared his thoughts on trying to overcome the quick start by Miami at the beginning of the game. On lack of toughness on offense. On the difference how feels walking off the court tonight compared after North Carolina win.

think they just came out, punched us in the mouth first and we didn’t really respond. I mean, granted, they are a good team, but they did nothing special today to make us play how poorly we did. That was kind of just ourselves and our attitude and our mindset going into the game. And we just didn’t really try and fight back.”We were just careless with the ball. I don’t think we were really playing selfish on offense today. I just think we didn’t take care of the ball like we normally should have. Just a lot of letting it slip by our hands, things like that. Careless passes. And it wasn’t really our offense. It was just individually; we weren’t taking care of the ball.“Yeah, I mean, conference play is real, man. Things can just flip the next day and the next game is going to be a real character test. Because they’re the best team in our conference right now, we’re going on the road to them, so we can’t repeat what we just did tonight. We’ve got to get our stuff together and stay focused because we can make happen what exactly happened to us. We can be on the other side of that, we’ve just got to stay focused and gameplan on what’s coming up next.

Following Duke’s win at Syracuse Saturday night via score of 77-55, Duke improving to 3-6 away from Cameron Indoor Stadium as Jon Scheyer is coaching inaugural season as Duke Head Coach Jon Scheyer had this to say for his opening statement. On what key was to being more efficient. On how Duke attacked the zone during 21-2 first half run. On what the conversation was with his shooters and if it was a normal game. On playing in front of 30,00 how it prepares the team for future games on the road. On Dariq Whitehead ‘s performance. On how Tyrese Proctor responded going up against Joe Girard.

“That was a great win for our team. Thought our defense really carried the day for us. It’s an honor for me to coach against Jim Boeheim. I’ve been at a lot of dinners where Coach Boeheim, Coach K, myself, a lot of memories. Just picking his brain and he’s been one of the all-time great coaches. For us, like I said, our defense. Tyrese [Proctor], the job that he did on [Joe] Girard was big-time. Dereck [Lively II] is such a difference maker protecting our basket. He just really is. I don’t think there’s anybody quite like him in the country. Mark [Mitchell], he just had a really good overall game. I could go on about each guy that played for us tonight. It was a great collective effort. Once we stopped turning the ball over, we were able to stretch the lead there. And that was a big key to the game there. Really happy for our group. We have to turn around quick now, for Monday. But happy to get this win against a good Syracuse team.”“I thought overall we just made the right play and shared it. I don’t think it’s more complicated than that. We didn’t do anything crazy on offense in terms of X-and-O wise. But it was more about playing fundamentally sound. When we left our feet or we just made passes without moving it, they turned the ball over. And look, in the first half, 15 of their 27 points were off turnovers. That was the difference to the game. And you come out in the second half, you only have two turnovers until the final two minutes, we made that adjustment. Proud of our group for doing that in-game. And also, this is our first time seeing their zone. Their zone is different. They have really good athletes. They anticipate well. They have active hands. So once we got accustomed to their zone, I thought we settled in and just made some really nice plays.“Well, one, we get out in transition. And when you can do that, that makes your life easy. We made good decisions there. And then just being poised. It looks easier than it is when you catch the ball in the middle of their zone. I actually thought Mark did a really nice job in there. Just had great poise, making the right plays. And then attacking the basket when we had the opportunity to doing that. But really it came down to sharing it, playing aggressively and getting out in transition.”“For us, still wanted to play to our identity. And that’s inside-out. Our threes, for the most part, came from getting the ball inside. And so, when you’re open, we have good shooters. We just don’t’ have guys that are flying off screens, shooting the ball, turning. But when they’re open, they can really hit. So, I thought we did a great job of having the balance. 13-of-26, ofcourse, I think the percentage reflectsthe quality of shot that we took. And that’s what it’s about for us. Not about a quantity, but more about what’s the quality, in terms of what’s the right shot that we’re getting. Open threes, we’ll take those. So, did a good job of that.”It’s probably the necessary next step for our team. Early we had some really rough performances on the road. And really since that point, even in January, we’re right there. We’ve either been leading or it’s a one-possession game down the stretch, except for the game at Miami. Besides that, we’ve been right there. For us, just to put a whole game together and you handle those key moments – end of the half I thought was the one point we let them go, I think it was a 6-0 run, we let them get back in it a bit. But besides that, just kept our foot on the gas and learned from our past mistakes and past experiences. And we’ll have to continue to do that moving forward.”“Dariq had a great game. He’s got a great offensive groove right now. His shooting and scoring, his passing, he comes in and we just go up. And they really challenged him early in this game on the defensive end. I thought there were a couple playsthere he could make. To hiscredit, he really responded. He can really guard. When you have him and Mark [Mitchell] on the floor, they can guard one-through-four at times. So, their versatility is key. Dariq has done such a better job just on both ends. His contributions to winning, throughout, I was really pleased with.”He did incredible. [Girard] got his points, outside of one Tyrese fouled him, besides that, he got his points when other guys were on him. I thought he was incredibly disciplined. He’s put together some big-time defensive performances back-to-back-to-back. It’s a credit to his growth. He’s tough as can be on that end. And on offense, it just was one of those nights. He had six assists; he only took five shots but he was 3-of-5. Just had a really good, here’s a floor general for us. Just really controlled the game. And then defended one of the best scorers in the league and limited him, even though I know he ended up with 21.

Though,

Jon Scheyer wasn’t the only one from Duke to share his thoughts following Duke’s 77-55 win at Syracuse as Jon Scheyer’s players did as well.

Those players included junior guard Jeremy Roach who shared his thoughts on what the key was to being so effective on what the 12-2 run was like on Dariq Whitehead’s performance off the bench was like.

“Just moving it.Letting everybody touch it. That’s a big thing in basketball, when everybody’s touching it, everybody’s got confidence. We’re making the right play, the ball’s probably going to go in. It’s a big thing with their zone, we wanted to be poised. We knew they kind of stand you up, slow you down. We wanted to move it, even when it gets late in the shot clock, we still wanted to be poised and find the best shot we can. I think we did that tonight.”It really just started on the defensive end and us getting out in transition too. We really knew the offense was going to come, but it all started with our defense for sure.”“I’m telling him every day, come in and shoot with confidence. Come in and play with confidence. I know what he’s capable of. I know how key he is to our team. How much he means to our team. So, to see him out there aggressive and not thinking about nothing it’s a big time and it elevates our team so much.

Freshman Forward Kyle Filipowski who shared his thoughts on what Duke’s approach was to attacking Syracuse’s zone. On what 21-2 run was like in the first half.

“Just like anyone should approach a 2-3 [zone], you’re trying to go inside-out. We had a few careless passes in the first half, we did a much better job in the second half ball-faking and getting it in the middle. Just as a team, throughout the season, we’ve shot an incredible percentage when we get the ball inside and then move it out, rather than swing it around the perimeter and taking a contested three. Just the guards looking inside and us bigs moving around and trying to stay open, that really opened it up for the guards to get great shots on the outside.“That’s exactly how we should approach teams and opportunities like that. We should really take the hope out of them. I think we did a great job of that today and we’ve got to do that more often.

Freshman guard Dariq Whitehead shared his thoughts on what he saw from Syracuse that let him have so much space. On how the team handled the atmosphere at Syracuse. On if he’s ever shot in a dome like this one. On the jump the team made defensively.

“Really it was just the way the team moved the ball. I feel like we moved the ball great and if I’m not mistaken, I think we shot 50-something [percent] from the field tonight. I just feel like we did a great job of moving the ball as a team and that was what helped us come out with the win.”They had a lot of fans here, it was very packed. We just had to create our own energy and coming out, that’s what we did. We were making sure that we came out with our own energy, made sure that we talked to each other all game and it paid off.”“I wouldn’t say the place matters, just really you’ve got to shoot it with confidence. I feel like if you’re shooting with confidence, you know you can hit anywhere. And that’s what I came out tonight and did. Shot it with confidenceYeah, defensively we did a great job. Tyrese [Proctor] he did a great job of guarding [Joe] Girard. He got some off late but I feel like for the main part, he did a great job containing him the whole game and keeping him below his average in the first half. So that was a good start for us. We’ve just got to continue to build from here.”

Following Louisville’s 83-73 win over Clemson in Louisville Kentucky Saturday junior forward JJ Traynor had this to say!

"Earlier in the year, I was shooting the ball well so I kind of fell in love with the 3 and that's not really my game,""I can shoot the ball, but lately I've been trying to get stuff around the paint first and then work my way out to the 3. I think having that mindset and then the coaches want me to bring a lot of energy on defense and I feel like that leads to my offense."

Following Louisville’s 83-73 win over Clemson in Louisville Kentucky Saturday freshman forward Mike James had this to say!

"I can shoot the ball, but lately I've been trying to get stuff around the paint first and then work my way out to the 3. I think having that mindset and then the coaches want me to bring a lot of energy on defense and I feel like that leads to my offense."

We took a big step today," James said. "I've got to give credit to El and Jae'Lyn (Withers). They really pulled us together every time it was a dead ball. When they were making that run, just told us to stay calm. I've got to give credit to the coaches too. They really coached us through it. This is something that we can carry on to the next games. When we have leads, just stay calm. They're going to make a run; they're going to try to get back into it. Just try to get back to the stuff that we were doing that got us to the lead."
