He changes their team in a huge way because of his threat, the way he moves without the ball, he puts a lot of pressure on your defense. Too many times we got caught without talking. You have to talk really well on switches, when they screen and they get all of these zoom actions. But I thought in the second half, we really dug down, held them to 33 points and did a better job. And they still, they almost shot 50 [percent] from the field. They had one of those nights. We’re kind of throwing things against the wall in hopesthat we find something that we can get our teeth in. And thatcan sometimes be difficult with our ability to switch. They don’t want to switch with [Ryan] Young and [Dereck] Lively. They will with h Lively, some. They want to keep it man-on-man with their length. And those are really good basketball players. We score 78 in here, make 10 three’s, Hunter Cattoor looked like Hunter Cattoor again, he’s been good, he was good at UVA, I can’t play without him, fellas. [Sean] Pedulla had his best game, by far, in quite some time. He’s a floor general, he had one bad shot in transition, but he played a good basketball game for us. [Grant] Basile was terrific, maybe his best. He was awfully good in here against Dayton, he’s having a good year for us, but he belonged on that floor. Asserted himself, was aggressive, took them into the post a couple of times and bang, bang, got to the charge circle and got up over his left shoulder and got a couple down. He was really good. It just shows the fight that we have. It shows the potential of our team and how we’ve been growing over the season. We fought hard, we dug ourselves into a hole for sure in the first half. We just let guys get open threes, and all that kind of stuff, so we kind of put it on ourselves. But that’s the fight that we need all 40 minutes, we can’t just do it for one half, we’ve got to do it for all 40.”“I mean, it’s not even offensively. We let them score 70, 70-something points? We’ve got to just double down on defense and get stops. It came down to a one possession game, it was tied up with 30 seconds left, so we’ve just got to get that last stop.”“I would’ve been happy with anybody, Tyrese shooting that shot. I mean, he got an open look, so I’ve got all the confidence in the world for him to hit that shot.”“It hurts because he’s been there for us. He’s had some big-time moments for us. We wanted to get this win for him, for sure. But just praying that he’s okay and he’ll have a speedy recovery.”

Yeah, he just elbowed me right in my adam’s apple, and Icouldn’t breathe for a minute. So I just needed to throw up and I was good. … as a team, we’re just working our butts off and that’s a game we should totally come out with a win. It just hurts because I know we’re working super hard, we’re getting all this backlash from everyone, but that’sjust bringing uscloser. It’s hard because you hate losing and I think this team is really special.”“I think it was just the giving up too many three-point opportunities. There was a lot of, I wouldn’t say miscommunication between the guards and the bigs off their zoom actions, but they just executed it really well. We adapted to it in the second half and did a much better job with it. That was a little x’s-and-o’s that we could’ve taken care of better in the first half.

“I thought it was one of the best start to finishes that we’ve had. I am really proud of the edge that we played with and our defense. Individually, Jeremey Roach was on another level. He’s been playing that way, 19 [points] and 10 [assists]. I thought him and Tyrese on our back court, they each had a couple of turnovers late but besidesthat they played close to a perfect game. Their defense, they played both ends. I thought it was maybe Mark Mitchell’s best game. I thought Mark gave us a huge boost consistently throughout the whole game and we were able to avoid some foul trouble with Dereck [Lively II] and Flip [Kyle Filipowski] in that first half. Other guys stepped up and we really kept our foot on the gas. Proud of the effort, proud of the win, and taking care of home court.”“It has been really important for us. Throughout the years, whether it was injury, whether it was adversity with a loss or a setback, we just kept saying ‘stick together, stick together, let’s be our best when it really matters.’ I give these guys a lot of credit because they haven’t pointed the finger and they continue to work. Each of them has gotten better. We spend a lot of time in practice working on individual work. Individual player development, which I think you can see the growth that our guys have made throughout the course of the season and, of course, understanding who you are playing with and how to play to each other’s strengths. In the beginning of the year, you are just, the value of every possession, the value of talking on switches, making the right kick or the right read. They’re used to just them scoring is always the best play. Now teams have game plans and I also think that’s a huge thing for freshmen to adjust to. As you get into ACC play people have different game plans against you, so I think that is absolutely true for our group. Where we are at right now, we are connected. Even the assists, take out some of those turnovers last couple of minutes, we were well over 2-1 [assists to turnovers]. Our offense is pushing it more and flowing into things and that’s how I want to play.“Give Tyrese a lot ofcredit. You have to be incredibly disciplined chasing him all over the court. Cattoor had 12 threes against us the last two times we played them and we know very well how good he is and Tyrese wanted that challenge. We’re lucky to have bigs that can really switch too. On a lot of those handoffs, top of the floor, we switched them, took away the three and then we have guards that can move their feet, keep guys in front, and that was a big key. Credit to Tyrese and the job that he did, especially to start the game, on him.”“It has definitely been developed. I can’t understate how important it is just to have time where this group has been able to play on the floor together. That is where you can really grow. For Jeremy, knowing how to play with Dereck and Tyrese. Dereck is unique. He is a difference maker with his ability to screen and rim run for a lob threat, and play behind the defense. He is just a different kind of guy. Flip, Mark, Dariq [Whitehead], or Jake [Grandison]. Icould go on and on, just to know how to play with those guys. I like those one-day preps for Duke more than I like four-day preps. They played Monday against Louisville. They played them very, very well. Jon [Scheyer] had them ready to go. They really got after us defensively. I didn't think we responded very well in some of those situations, but a lot ofcredit to Coach Scheyer and his team. Again, he had them ready to go. They were sharp. And on the other end, so many things to contend with. [Kyle] Filipowski’s terrific. [Tyrese] Proctor-- we handled some things defensively in game one, when Jeremy [Roach] wasn't shooting the ball great, and it gave us the opportunity to get under some things so we keep body on body with Kyle [Filipowski] and he wasn't going to let us do that. He stopped behind it and made a couple of net... that's disruptive. He's a really good player. He was good. He was good tonight.”There's just such pressure and really took... defensively you want to disrupt other people's route and timing. And you do that with pressure. You do that with ball pressure. You do that with topping actions where you're on top of it, not going to let the cutter get to the action. And some of our stuff requires that. Just their speed and we couldn't get anything in transition. You know, again, they were really, really strong, really good. They were good.”He's really good. He's a very good basketball player. That was his third game as a college player. And, trying to bring him into the fold, I thought he had a nice outing. I thought he had a couple of quick shots. I thought he got dotted up a couple of times defensively. But it's great to have him on the floor. “I think we were just really locked in on the personnel, locked in on the scout [report]. We know they run a lot of zoom actions and stuff like that. The first time, in Blacksburg, we kind of gotcaught up not talking and giving guys wide open threesin the first half, and that givesthem confidence. So I kind of wanted to take their confidence away early and not give them anything easy, anything open, and I think we did that tonight.”That was definitely a big emphasis. He got like four or five threes in Blacksburg, so we didn’t want to give him anything and make it as tough as possible for him.”We know we didn’t give them our 100%. They really haven’t seen [the real] us. We’re a lot better than we were a month ago too. Our team’s healthy and I’m just happy we’re healthy and we’re trending in the right direction.”They’re growing up. We went through a lot of learning curves in the beginning of the season. I’m just happy we’re growing up right now. We’re finding our way and this is the best time of year to be playing your best basketball.”

Freshman forward Mark Mitchell had this to say for his opening statement on where he sees this Duke team now, When asked to describe that home court advantage that Cameron provides Duke. When asked if he felt like Duke should considered a young team.

definitely think it was one of my best games of the season, just letting things come to me, going with the flow, being aggressive on both ends of the floor, and just doing what Ican to help my team win. That loss at Virginia Tech was pretty painful, one of the more painful losses of the season, so I just came ready to play. I’ve been waiting for this game since the last game we played [against Virginia Tech], and I think I just came out and played hard tonight. I think I was out there just taking what the defense was giving me, taking my time, finding the gaps in the defense, attacking, playing strong, and on defense just playing hard. Knowing my assignment, knowing the scout [report], knowing who I’m guarding.“We’re all coming together. We’re all getting to play together finally, and I think it’s a good sight to see. We’re clicking, moving the ball, more assists than turnovers, and I think we’re going to just keep on building.”Just the comfortability of being at home, especially with the fans, I think they give us like a plus-five in points, naturally. But it’s great being at home, just having the crowd on your side, especially for us being a young team, it’s really good to have people helping you and pushing you [to] get to the finish line.”“No. It’s February. We played a great game overall – offense, defense. We turned the ball over a couple of times, but we were playing together. We were playing defense together, we were talking, we were passing the ball, and it was just a great game.”

When asked what the keys to his getting more comfortable and improving throughout the season Dereck Livey II responded Just putting in the work, man. I’ve been in the gym every single day in the morning, lifting, working out, just doing anything I can to make myself better so the team can win. I figure that my job is to be strong in the paint, my job is to block shots, and my job is to clean up anything that happens. It’s just being able to embrace my job and just take it wholeheartedly.

Well obviously that was not a good night for us and a great night for them. Congratulations to [NC] State, they outplayed us really in every facet. Their guards controlled the game, they outfought us. We knew they would be a really hungry team coming off a couple of tough losses and we’ve known they were a dangerous team. They’ve been right there with some of the best teams in the country and we have a lot of respect for them. But that was not a good enough performance or effort on our part and that’s on me. Unfortunately there have been moments I’ve been through as a player and coach where you have a night like this, and it’s not okay. It’s not okay to have a night like this. For us to learn from it, we’ve got to grow and change. I take responsibility for that as a coach. This is disappointing, but credit to them. We’re 2-2 and there’s still 16 games left in the ACC, there’s a long way to go. We have to learn from this though. Happy to answer any questions.”

For this group in particular, to experience this, to experience playing on the road, while you wish you were 2-0 on the road or 4-0 in conference, but that’s not how it works. For us it’s all about how you learn from it and that’s how I’m gonna approach it.”
