Following Duke shooting 0-14 to start game, being abysmal offensively them suffering 84- 60 loss to NC State in North Carolina’s state capital Wednesday Duke Head Coach Jon Scheyer who is coaching his inaugural season as Duke Head Coach had this to say for his opening statement!

Well obviously that was not a good night for us and a great night for them. Congratulations to [NC] State, they outplayed us really in every facet. Their guards controlled the game, they outfought us. We knew they would be a really hungry team coming off a couple of tough losses and we’ve known they were a dangerous team. They’ve been right there with some of the best teams in the country and we have a lot of respect for them. But that was not a good enough performance or effort on our part and that’s on me. Unfortunately there have been moments I’ve been through as a player and coach where you have a night like this, and it’s not okay. It’s not okay to have a night like this. For us to learn from it, we’ve got to grow and change. I take responsibility for that as a coach. This is disappointing, but credit to them. We’re 2-2 and there’s still 16 games left in the ACC, there’s a long way to go. We have to learn from this though. Happy to answer any questions.”

On where he felt the game got away from Duke!

“It’s hard to point to one thing. It was basically everything. It was our defense, it was not being strong enough, it was their defense that got us out of sync. Having not been in this environment before, when it went that way we didn’t stick together the way that you have to. The times when we executed, made passes, and had some poise we actually got to the paint and had some good shots. But there are too many empty possessions. We knew coming in that they were great at creating turnovers, we had 21. That’s not going to get it done against anybody, especially not these guys.”

On teams self -professed timidness!

On losing back to back road game!

It’s hard to have a great perspective right now when you’re in the moment and you’re disappointed, to say the least. You know it’s a long year. I knew this when I took the job that there’s gonna be some moments like this where people can doubt you, they can doubt us as a team, sometimes the best way to learn is to experience it. For this group in particular, to experience this, to experience playing on the road, while you wish you were 2-0 on the road or 4-0 in conference, but that’s not how it works. For us it’s all about how you learn from it and that’s how I’m gonna approach it.”

We know the road games are tough. Everybody is going to have their best shot, their best game with us. We got to be even more locked in on the road. Learn from this and go to [Boston College] on Saturday.”

Following Duke avenging 84-60 loss to NC State on January 4, 2023 in North Carolina’s state capital Duke Head Coach Jon Scheyer who is coaching his inaugural season as Duke Head Coach had this to say for his opening statement. On what was done differently defensively compared to first game. On the way Jeremy Roach has been playing recently. On what was going on after final timeout and needing just one more stop. On what Duke did defensively to slow down D.J. Burns Jr. in second half.

“What a special night in Cameron. The crowd was absolutely incredible and really proud of our team for the growth that we’ve made this season, their perseverance. NC State is a really good team. They’re explosive offensively. I thought our defense was the key to the game. It’s been really what we’ve hung our hat on all year long. Dereck [Lively]’s job on [D.J.] Burns. Tyrese [Proctor] with [Terquavion] Smith. We were fortunate too. They missed some shots. Collectively, I thought we played a great defensive team and down the stretch, Jeremy [Roach] really made some key plays. I think he scored six of our last 10. Pressure free throws with Tyrese, with Jeremy. We can handle that situation better, but also, they’re throwing up some big-time shots. That’s what they do. So, really proud of this team. Proud of going undefeated at home. To represent Cameron Indoor Stadium this way is a big deal. Get refreshed and focused for one more game.”“The fact that we had more points from turnovers than they did speaks for itself. I think they had one pick-six when they went and laid it in, but besides that, I think we did a great job making them a half-court team. They’re fast. They get down the floor as quickly as anybody we’ve played. It starts there. I don’t even want to compare it to the last game because I could go on and on about that. It started there and once we got them in the half-court, I thought five guys were just moving together. We did a good job controlling the ball. We played without fouling for the most part and give them credit, I thought in the first half, they made some tough shots and that’s what they do. You just need to stay the course and keep playing.”Jeremy [Roach]’s a winner. He’s been through it. It reminds me of last year at the end with Jeremy in the tournament. He’s done that for us in stretches all year long and this is the most consistent that he’s played. We ask a lot of him. He’s guarding [Jarkel] Joiner today. He did a good job battling him and then on offense, we need himto score and create, but he just has a knack for making timely baskets. We didn’t call a timeout. We were up by two. Put the ball in his hands, and that was a big-time bucket right there. A key moment, obviously, down the stretch to carry us and finish a game, but it's just who he is. He’s done it really since high school. We need him to continue to do it.”“That is not an easy position to be in. That’s a tough spot to be in for sure and you can get rattled. That’s an easy thing to not have poise and we didn’t turn the ball over. They hit tough shots and really it justcomes down to one stop at that point. I thought we were tired because they pick you up full court the whole game and they can wear you down a little bit. We made a couple tired decisions probably. So, just to really buckle down and get one stop and we did.”“One, [D.J.] Burns probably missed some looks he normally could make, and we were fortunate there, but we ended up not really doubling much because Dereck [Lively] just did a great job battling him. It’s such a luxury for us to have Dereck Lively and to have Ryan Young who are two very different players. Ryan can be very physical when he’s in and Dereck, obviously, with his length and instincts and timing. They just did a great job. So, for us, the hardest part wasrebounding. He goes after his own rebound and they’re flying in, but I give both those guys a lot of credit for the job they did.

Though,

Duke Head Coach Jon Scheyer wasn’t the only Head Coach to share his thoughts follow Duke’s 71-67 win as NC State Kevin Keatts did as well saying this for his opening statement. On how Duke affected Tequavion Smith on tempo on Jarkel Joiner.

First of all, congratulations to Duke. I think Jon [Scheyer] has done a really good job with his team. I don't know if that was 15 or 16 wins at home, but that's pretty impressive to go undefeated at home in a year and you look at that team, they've grown so much. I remember when we played them, I don't know, months ago, and they played like freshmen. And you can tell that those guys have really grown up and it was a great game. I thought we fought through a lot of adversity. We had a couple of our starters that I didn't think played well-- man, but the fight in our team is so great. Obviously, you look up and I just told them keep fighting and then I think with maybe 40 seconds left, it was a one possession game and so I’m proud of our guys. I told them in the locker room we've had a really, really good season, regular season 22 wins and 12 conference wins and there's so much to be proud of and we have to turn our attention to, obviously, the ACC tournament.“Yeah, I think they’re just doing a good job. He’s such an elite scorer, and a lot of times, people are more face-guarding and sitting in gaps and making it tough for him to get the basketball and I think a lot of teams are trying to be really physical with him. And so some of those things, and he's been-- one of the things we got to clean up with him as he's been off the court for most for the last three or four games because he's picking up two fouls in the second half, I mean the first half so he's not allowed to play, so we’ve got to do a better job of him not fouling.”thought the tempo wasreally good. It’s weird because it wassimilarto the first game. Both teamsreally defended, if you remember, even though we jumped out to an early lead, it was a low scoring game at first. It was the same thing here-- kind of went back and forth. We never really got going. I think both teams missed shots early, and then I think we kind of loosened up. Jarkel Joiner really got us going and then I thought we played off of that. We had our moments. We cut it to two to four and then obviously they went up 10. It was a game of runs. And, if I could ask, if we were playing an NBA game, maybe had more time, and we could have maybe won the game, but we didn’t.”“He's been great. Listen, I thought we hit a home run with him. I knew it when we got him as a person. And I'll say this: as a person, he's unbelievable; better person than basketball player, but man, he's been so huge for us. He's played as an all-conference guy, first team, second team, all-conference guy down the stretch and he's made big plays and most guys when they went down early, probably wouldn't have came back in the game and we couldn't keep him out of the game. So he's been huge for our team, on both ends of the floor and been our floor general and kind of one of the heart and soul of our team. So I'm proud and glad that we got him.

Following Duke avenging 84-60 loss to NC State on January 4, 2023 in North Carolina’s state capital with 71-67 win on Tuesday in Durham following Jon Scheyer finishing inaugural home season as Duke Head Coach with 71-67 win over NC State Junior Guard Jeremy Roach had this to say for his opening statement on what it means to be apart of Duke team that finished undefeated at Cameron Indoor Stadium. When asked if he making a conscious effort to be more assertive on offense in second half and late in the game.

We just wanted to bring it home. Obviously, we had flashbacks to what [NC State] did to us [in Raleigh] and how they were celebrating on their court, but we just wanted to finish it out and get a win and, obviously, protect home court and go undefeated all season at home. I’m just glad we got it done. Obviously, last year didn’t end the way we wanted it to in the last home game at Cameron, so we just wanted to finish it out and do whatever it takes to get a win.”“It means a lot. Shout out to all the Crazies. They’ve been doing a great job, camping out, supporting us all year. They give us that energy, that boost that we need, and it’s been a fun ride with them.”“I pretty much do whatever the team needs me to do, whether it’s pass, rebound, take a charge, whatever it is. My job tonight was to finish it out and score some buckets. As a captain, I’ve got to lead us to the promised land and finish out games like that.“It’s big-time for ourconfidence and just the continuity of our group. Seeing these wins before the [ACC] Tournament is a huge confidence boost.”

Freshman Kyle Filipowski had this to say for his opening statement On Duke finishing the season undefeated at home “We’re trying to get a top-4 bid going into the [ACC] Tournament, and that was a huge game for us. We’ve had goals this whole season and we’re starting to get where we want to be, so we’re in a really good spot moving forward.” “I wasn’t entirely satisfied with my first-half performance. I was getting to the line, but I still knew I should’ve finished at the rim more. So I just came out there [in the second half] still with an aggressive mindset, still playing smart, trying not to [commit] any charges, things like that. This game definitely meant something to me, too, from when I first played them and how they really punched me in the mouth. I wanted to make a statement and show I’ve grown up a lot this season.” On Duke finishing regular season undefeated at home.

Dereck Lively II who is a freshman like his teammate Kyle Filipowski though unlike his teammate Kyle Filipowski Dereck Lively is a center had this to say following Duke avenging 84-60 loss to NC State in North Carolina’s state capital with 71-67 win on Tuesday in Durham. Just being able to grow up, I feel like at the beginning of the season it took us a little while to find ourselves, to find out who we were and who we could be, but by the end of the season, it feels like all the chips are falling into place. All we’re doing is just doing what we can each day to prepare ourselves for the next game, make sure our games get better, and make sure we get better.” “I feel like every game now is a physical game. You can’t shy away from physicality – you’ve got to accept it. As a big man, you’ve just got to accept your role. You’ve got to figure out what you can do to bestcontribute to the team, stay on the court, and you know you can win the games. I feel like my role is protecting the paint and do anything and everything I can to make sure no one scores in our paint. If that’s a post move, if that’s someone driving, if that’s someone going up for a dunk, it’s my job to take care of it. So I just feel like, no matter how much the physicality I have to deal with, getting punched in the eye, elbowed in the mouth, I’m doing everything I can and just making sure we get that W.” “If I was a couple months back, thinking ahead, I wouldn’t expect us to be in this position. And I’m just glad we’re in this position, honestly. Being able to go through such different emotions, differentsituationsin games, wins and losses, it helps you build through adversity. Being able to make sure that we all have focus on being able to be here with each other and not listening to anyone else outside and not listening to anything on social media. We’re just making sure that we do what we can in the gym, so that we can do everything we can to get the win.
