Though,

Following Duke’s come from behind 77-69 win over Pittsburgh Wednesday Jon Scheyer who is coaching his inaugural as Duke Head Coach had this to say for his opening statement! On the decision to start switching on defense and why it was such an effective strategy. On the difference Tyrese Proctor makes when he is on the floor. On Kyle Filipowski’s 28-point, 15 rebound performance. On the crowd’s energy in Cameron tonight and how take energy to road games.

Though,

Jon Scheyer who is coaching inaugural season as Duke Head Coach wasn’t the one to share his thoughts following Duke’s come back win over Pittsburgh 77-69 as freshman forward Kyle Filipowski, freshman guard Tyrese Proctor, freshman forward Dariq Whitehead did as well.

Freshman center Kyle Filipowski had this to say for his Opening Statement on what Jon Scheyer said to the team at halftime “I think a big thing was just turnovers in the first half for us. [Reducing the turnovers] gave us a lot more shot attempts in the second half. And also, just our defense – we let up around 40 points in the first half. That wasn’t really our type of defense. I don’t know how [many points] we let up in the second half, but it wasn’t nearly as much. That also turned into offense for us. We were all on the same page tonight and it was a really good win overall.” “We’ve just got to build off this now. We know how great of a team we can be. We know we still have a lot better things to do as well, like take care of the ball a little better, and things like that. This is a just a little sneak peak of the potential we have and how good all of us can be.”

Freshman guard Tyrese Proctor had this to say for his opening statement on the play of the Duke freshman tonight.

Especially with Jeremy [Roach] being out, on court I’ve got to be the leader – I’m playing point guard. He’sstill impacting us off the court, grabbing guys through little bits of the game and just talking to us. But when I’m on the floor, I’m going to be the most vocal to everyone and just try to get everyone on the same page. The main message I was giving to them was don’t give up and keep fighting.

“Everyone’s saying we’re all soft and all young, but we don’t let that slide and we wanted to come out and prove everyone a point – that we can hang with everyone and we can play the way we want to play. Everyone around the country’stalking about our age and how young we are, [teams] trying to out-tough us and be more physical with us, but we hear that and we just take it on and use it to build confidence. We came out and wanted to prove a point and I thought we did.” “It wascrazy. We just fed off the Crazies and the crowd tonight. It was a great atmosphere and I’m happy we got the win.”

Freshman Dariq Whitehead who unlike his freshman teammates Kyle Filipowski, Tyrese Proctor is a forward had this to say following Duke’s come back win over Pittsburgh for his opening statement, when asked if this game felt like a turning point for this Duke team.

“It’s the first day of class, the Crazies came back, so we fed off that energy and it was huge for us. I honestly feel like they changed the game, really.” “We’ve just got to continue to grow in practice, limit the turnovers. I feel like if we just continue to play as a team and just continue to share the ball, then the sky’s the limit for this team.”It should be a turning point for the team. Just us seeing how well we share the ball together, I feel like it should be huge for this team. That should continue down the road.

As Duke beat Florida State 86-67 Jaylen Blakes, Dariq Whitehead, Ryan Young led the way offensively as Jaylen Blakes was 6-11 on field goals, 4-6 on 3 pointers to go along with 1 rebound , 3 assists , 17 points. Dariq Whitehead was 5-11 on field goals, 2-6 on 3 pointers to go along with 1 rebound , 2 assists, 16 points. Ryan Young was 7-7 on field goals to go along with 12 rebounds, 2 assists, 20 points.

“According to espnapp

Following Duke’s 86-67 win over Florida State Duke Head Coach had this to say for his opening statement. On the success of playing with smaller lineup. On Jaylen Blakes performance going forward on the team coming back motivated from break on Dariq Whitehead’s performance!

Happy New Year, everyone. It was a good win for us, really proud of the response we had. We played one game in 20 days, we felt like, all right, here’s another new season for us and fully healthy, thought really everybody that played stepped up and made some big time plays in key moments. We had a few lineups on the court, we just had a roll and went with it, but I thought our defense was back to where we needed to be. Offensively we really shared the ball well. Ryan Young obviously a big-time night, not missing a field goal, not missing a free throw. Just his rebounding, you feel like when a shot’s taken he’s going to come up with the ball. Happy to answer anything but really proud of this, and for me, I started here in 2006 and Florida State’s been one of the teams we’ve had incredible battles with. So much respect for Coach Ham [Florida State Coach Leonard Hamilton] and what he’s done, and to be in this situation coaching against him and a great program like Florida State is an honor for me and obviously for our program.

It’s really just a feel, and we have a plan going into the game, but certain guys, one were in foul trouble, but certain guys had it going, and I thought that Dariq [Whitehead] had some really good minutes and that lineup once we had it; Jake [Jacob Grandison] came off the bench, and we just went on a run so we kept that group in and to extend the lead to 17 and a half was a big deal.”

“Well, I think for us as we go on in the season we may start different groups, and tonight this was, we felt, the best thing. Jaylen [Blakes], his energy, his confidence, and his defense has been rock solid for us and made that switch and credit to him to make the best of that opportunity. So really proud of what he’s done, you know he’s coming off a year where he didn’t play, he’s been in different environments, and he’s just grown and is as hard any worker that we have. He studies gameplans like you wouldn’t believe, and just proud and happy for him. Can’t be a one-time thing, need to continue to build, but knowing him he’ll be back to work right away.

“I give them credit. They knew we had to be a lot better, and so it wasn’t like I had to convince them of that. Really it was…I don’t want to say starting from scratch, because it’s not like we have to blow this whole thing up or anything. We’ve had a good start to the year, but it’s a fresh start and when you have that much time off in between games it’s hard to keep the same rhythm, it just is. So for us, we went and got back to work, four really good days of preparation. Our guys embraced it, they worked really hard, we got back into the shape that we needed to. For us, going against each other has gotten us better. That’s something that not a lot of teams have, where we can put 10 guys out on the floor that can go at it in practice. We need to balance that and to not do it too much to where we get banged up but we did that this week and it really benefitted us.” “For me when I was looking at Dariq, one, I think that sometimes getting away and clearing your head and coming back can be a good thing. You know we’ve seen that over the years for Christmas break and just like I said for the team that it was a fresh start, I feel the same way for Dariq. Take what you’ve learned and to his credit, I thought he had his best two days of practices. I’ve always believed that preparation leads to confidence, and that’s why I said I have a lot of confidence in you. You practice this way, I’m excited to see where it goes. He did a really good job tonight. You can tell he gives us a different dimension and we need to follow that up with consistency and building in practice but give him credit. Look, this is…for any of our guys, it’s never smooth sailing. It just isn’t, and so for Dariq I think he’s gotten a lot tougher in this stretch. He’s not the only one I can go through. Any of our guys, any of our freshman have gone through ups and downs already. Any freshman who’s evercome through here has gone through that, and they’re going to be better for it. Just fighting out is the only way to do it and that’s what Dariq is starting to do, and I’m really proud of him for it.

Though,

Jon Scheyer who is coaching his inaugural season as Duke Head Coach wasn’t the only one to share his thought as Duke rebounded from 81-70 loss to Wake Forest in Winston -Salem Saturday with 86-67 win over Florida State as Jaylen Blakes who is a sophomore Ryan Young who played for former Duke player, coach Chris Collins at Northwestern before coming to Duke as Graduate Transfer this season shared their thoughts as well.

Jaylen Blakes had this to say about being a leader on this years team, on his own performance.

“Going into this year, knowing that I was one of the four returners, with Jeremy [Roach], Spencer [Hubbard], and Stanley [Borden], just having that emphasis of what people taught me the year before, just continuing to pass down that tradition and culture of what Duke Basketball is and what it’s about and continue to teach everybody that’s new, the 11 new guys that we have, and continue to build. I’m just doing whatever’s necessary to win. The best way that Ican lead is by example, so just putting everything out there on the line, and everybody else is doing the exactsame. That’s what Duke Basketball is about. We’re going to compete to the very end. We’re not going to let someone come into Cameron [Indoor Stadium] and out-compete us. So we’re justcompeting every second that we’re on the court.”My teammates did a great job of finding me in open spaces. Even the drives, the bigs really sealed off the guards and when [Florida State] switched, it kind of opened up the paint. Just taking what the defense gives you, at the end of the day, and playing off of that. It’s never been an emphasis [on offense, from the coaches]. More the emphasis is on the defense and just continuing to stop other people, keep people out of the paint. Offensively, we’re going to take what they give because we have so many weapons. It could be anyone’s day. It happened to be that I scored and Ryan [Young] scored, and we had a lot of people score.”

Ryan Young had this to say for his Opening Statement!

We knew that there was going to be an opportunity today with some mismatches in the post where [Florida State was] going to have a smaller guard switched onto me or whoever gets the ball – Flip [Kyle Filipowski] or Dereck [Lively II]. We knew that they would probably be either sending a double team or crowding the paint up so we were going to be able to pass out of there. And that’s a real positive and an advantage I think our bigs can bring – myself, Flip’s a really good passer, and Dereck’s a really good passer out of the post. That’s something that really, I think, can hurt teams, when we throw the ball in and it’s not just a one-on-one game there. All five guys are in the play, with the passing ability that we have out of the post. It’ssomething that I take a lot of pride in personally, and I know that Flip and Dereck do as well because they’re just as good of passers. It makes us hard to guard as a group.

On the chemistry between him, Jacob Grandison!

You could say it’s old man chemistry, with us being 23 and 24 [years old] on this team. When you get that many buckets – I had a few in the paint in a row there toward the end of the first half – and Jake’s so good at moving off the ball. When he passes, he’s immediately moving and it makes it really easy for me in the post. Catch the ball, right back to him, and he’s wide open, especially when you have that kind of attraction – when you score a few in the paint, you know that there’s going to be some emphasis on you and their guards are going to be creeping in. So I kicked it out [to him] and he doesn’t miss many open threes. It's a good bet.”

Following Duke winning in blowout fashion on the road Saturday in Atlanta defeating Georgia Tech 86-43 Duke Head Coach Jon Scheyer who is coaching his inaugural season as Duke Head Coach had this to say for his opening statement on Duke’s offensive efforts numbers, assists numbers, On what it’s like as a coach waiting for the results to show with all the work being put in. On Tyrese eight assists, efforts today. On Duke’s low foul count, dicipline.

“Really proud of our team and our effort. We had a tough loss on Monday night and to have a really good week of preparation, we felt Georgia Tech’s a dangerous team, especially at home. And I thought it was probably the best collectively on defense that we’ve played. And then on the offensive end, to share the ball and get 24 assists, to hold them to 43 and then have 24 assists, really proud of this group and how we responded. Especially when we face adversity. I thought Jeremy [Roach] played just an incredibly solid game, and when’s he ready to shoot like that, he’s heard me say it all the time, I think every shot he shoots is going in. Him and Tyrese [Proctor] had really good control over our team and just proud of the effort. Need to keep building, every game is tough and to get a win here is a great step and back to work tomorrow.”“I think the biggest thing for us, we’ve done that in spurts throughout the year, we haven’t done it for 40 minutes of a game. And with every single one of our guys, it doesn’t come from a selfish place or trying to do it just on your own, it’s knowing what to do and for us, we spend a lot of time in key stretches – I thought the stretch where they cut it to seven in the first half, we’ve talked about segments of games, for us we felt it was a really important segment. Because it can either be tied at half, it can be a three, four-point game, or we can extend it. Again, do you think it’s going to be 18, that’s not necessarily what you’re talking about but to push it to 18 is a big deal. So for us, it’s watching film, we had some really competitive practices where we’re just learning how to get to the next action. If that’s not there, let’s say we call a play, what to do next? Where, for a lot of our guys, they haven’t had to do that. Proud of them learning, proud of them blocking out any noise, just focusing on getting better every day. It thought it really translated today with our offense. You know, I had a year to get ready for this. It’s different when you’re in it. For us, we’ve literally returned, it’s the youngest team ever, in Duke history. And so for us, the way that we’ve responded to a loss or a setback this year, that’s what our program is all about. And the only way you do that is if you hate the outcome. There’s no moral victories, there’s no part of me that was happy after losing to Virginia Tech but I’ve also seen with our group how we’ve gotten better. There’s no question we’re better than we were a month ago, or two months ago. And this league is really tough. It can expose you, especially on the road, and I think that’s been a big adjustment for us. But my thing has really been staying present, controlling what we can control, getting better every day, and I believe in this group. While also at the same time understanding the areas we have to get better at.”Talking about getting better, Tyrese from the start of the season to now has just grown tremendously. And we’re at our best when Tyrese is doing this. And we have weapons on the floor and I thought he put them in a great position to be really successful. I’m not positive, but I think a couple of Jeremy [Roach’s] three’s were from Tyrese. I don’t know how many, whether it’s two or three, but Jeremy, you’re asking him the question about carrying the load for the most part of the year, he hasn’t had anybody necessarily make him better. And Tyrese can do that. So what he’s done, distributing the ball, he competes and defends all the time, that’s an added element for us that’s made us a lot better.“Yeah, that was great, let’s see if we can do it again. That was great. I think it was part of how the game went and you know, for Dereck [Lively II], that’s been something he’s had to work through. I thought he did a great job of playing without his hands, not putting his hands on guys. We need him in the game, but we’ll see if we can do that again coming up.”

Though,

Duke Head Coach Jon Scheyer who is coaching his inaugural as Duke Head Coach wasn’t the only Head Coach to share his thoughts following Duke winning in blowout fashion Saturday in Atlanta defeating Georgia Tech 86-43 as Georgia Tech Head Coach Josh Pastner did as well. Josh Pastner had this to say for his opening statement on Duke’s shooting percentage, overall size!

Okay that obviously was not a good game. Give Duke total credit, they just kicked our rear end. Their size was overwhelming for us and we got in stretches where we couldn’t score and it just spirals. It just spiraled and went downhill fast. Last ofur minutes of that first half and the start of the second half, we just couldn’t score again. Just couldn’t score. Felt there were some times where we can usually score over guys, like Jalon Moore can get a shot over his guys, I felt like we were really small in a lot of areas. So credit to Duke and just that wasn’t a good game for us.”“Yeah. I felt we looked small out there, just size wise I thought we were really small. [Kyle] Filipowski, [Dereck] Lively, Filipowski for sure is going to be a high draft pick and probably Lively as well too, or at least projected to be at least somewhere in the first round. Obviously, we tried to recruit the heck out of Ryan Young and so we were just small. Even the perimeter, even the wings, we were small. I thought Mark Mitchell, theirthree-man, was biggerthan ourcenter. I just thought we were small, and it wasjust overwhelming at times. And we tried to play small to give us some things offensively but they were able to just stay at home on the perimeter and just try to play volleyball at the rim with some our drives down there and things just kind of spiraled.

Following Duke winning in blowout fashion on the road Saturday in Atlanta defeating Georgia Tech 86-43 Jeremy Roach had this to say about Duke’s improved shooting over the last couple games, On Duke’s big men (Dereck Lively, Ryan Young ) dominating inside against Georgia Tech. On Duke’s ball movement in second half confidence the team had. On Duke’s take away’s from Virginia Tech game they used in this game. On Duke’s Defensive effort. “Us sharing the ball, that gives us confidence. And then when you see other people share the ball, that makes you want to share the ball. When you know a shot’s coming, when you know the ball’s coming to you, you’re going to be more prepared for the shot, more ready for the shot and also you’re probably going to make the shot. So, just being ready on the catch … and keep sharing, keep moving, keep getting paint touches, second and third drive and kicks, I think that’s big for us.”“Just kind of wanted to have the big men set the tone [Georgia Tech is] kind of smaller inside, so we wanted to get them going early and I think we did. Towards the end of the first half, they really got going and we brought the lead up to, I think, 18. So, that helped us a lot“Like I said earlier, when that ball’s popping and everybody is touching it, then everybody feels like they’re in the game and everybody feels like they can make a shot. So, if we get first and second drive and kicks, stuff like that, and guys are ready for open kicks and they’re ready to shoot the ball, it’s fun playing like that. And when you’re making shots and winning like this, it’s very fun.”“Definitely we have a lot of takeaways from the [Virginia Tech] game. But just overall, we wanted to focus on ourselves, moving the ball, getting back to what we do, moving the ball, getting stops on defense. I think in the [Virginia Tech] game, we got a little too stagnant so getting guys moving on the offensive end, I think that was a big thing for why we had success today.”

“According to go duke.com”“Really just playing our defense. We knew they liked to do that motion, get the ball to the elbow, do a lot of split actions, stuff like that. Just doing our principles, stuff that we work on every day in practice, and it translated into the game. I think we held them to 43 points so we did a great job on all of their best players and we felt like we were locked in for pretty much all 40 minutes.”
