As Duke Is Opposing Pittsburgh In Quarterfinal Today In Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament Jon Scheyer Is Coaching Inaugural One As Head Coach, Ryan Young Is Playing In Inaugural One!

As a Special Assistant, Assistant Coach, Associate Head Coach at Duke to now retired Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski Jon Scheyer helped spark the Blue Devils to two ACC championships and the 2010 NCAA title as a player from 2007-10, has helped Duke compile a 219-62 (.779) record, a national championship (2015), two Final Fours (2015, 2022) and two ACC Tournament crowns (2017, 2019) during his time as an assistant or associate head coach. He helped mentor Tyus Jones in Duke’s 2015 national title season, as the Blue Devils finished the year ranked third nationally in adjusted offensive efficiency. Jones was named the Final Four Most Outstanding Player in Indianapolis and was a first-round pick in the 2015 NBA Draft after just one college season.

In 2017, Jon Scheyer helped mold Luke Kennard into a consensus All-American after a breakout sophomore season that saw him rank second in the ACC in scoring and three-point field goal percentage. He also helped develop Frank Jackson into one of the most dynamic young guards in the country during the 2016-17 campaign.

Luke Kennard and Frank Jackson were selected 12th and 31st overall, respectively, in the 2017 NBA Draft.

After Grayson Allen finished his career in 2018 as the 12th-leading scorer in Duke history with 1,996 points, he was drafted in the first round by the Utah Jazz. Allen joined Scheyer as two of just five Blue Devils in history with 1,900 or more points, 400 or more rebounds and 400 or more assists (Grant Hill, Danny Ferry, Johnny Dawkins).

The 2019 campaign saw Tyus’ brother Tre enjoy a breakout year as a freshman by setting the program’s single-season record for assist-to-turnover ratio (3.62), while establishing himself as one of the nation’s premier defensive players. Jones’ classmate, RJ Barrett, finished his remarkable freshman season at Duke as a consensus first-team All-American, the USA Today National Player of the Year, and the overall No. 3 selection in the NBA Draft.

R.J. Barrett broke a myriad of program and ACC records, including both the Duke and conference freshman scoring record with 860 points. His 860 points were surpassed on the program’s single-season scoring list by only J.J. Redick’s 964 points as a senior in 2006. Barrett averaged 22.6 points and was the only major conference player in 2018-19 to score 13+ points in every game of the season.

Under Jon Scheyer’s guidance, Tre Jones parlayed his phenomenal freshman season into a decorated sophomore campaign that ended with him as the 2020 ACC Player of the Year, the ACC Defensive Player of the Year, and an All-American. After two seasons as the starting point guard, Jones declared for the NBA Draft, leaving Duke as the program’s career record-holder in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.88) and ranking third in assists per game (5.8).

Throughout the 2021-22 season, Jon Scheyer worked closely with ACC Freshman of the Year and consensus second-team All-American Paolo Banchero. He also helped guide second-team All-ACC pick Wendell Moore Jr., into performing as one of the nation's most complete players. Moore capped his season winning the Julius Erving Award as the nation's best small forward.

Paolo Banchero capped his collegiate career as the overall No. 1 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic, one of a record five Blue Devils drafted in 2022, including four in the first round. In Jon Scheyer’s time at Duke, he has helped mentor 26 Blue Devils to be drafted – 20 being first round selections.

He averaged 14.4 points per game while scoring in double figures 114 times (sixth-most in Duke history) and leading the Blue Devils to a 115-29 (.799) record.

As Duke is opposing in quarterfinal today in Atlantic Coast Conference Jon Scheyer is coaching in inaugural one as Head Coach, Ryan Young is playing in inaugural one!

    Though,

Before Duke opposes Ryan Young previewed playing in his inaugural Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament following playing three seasons at Northwestern where he played for another former Duke coach , player current Northwestern Head Coach Chris Collins talking about his initial thoughts about his first ACC Tournament
“It's exciting because I think it's pretty open right now. There's a lot of good teams and a lot of people are playing their best ball right now so it should be exciting to see who can make it to the top and claim the ACC Tournament. Obviously, I've played in a few Big 10 Tournaments myself, so it's going to be a good test for our group to see how both mentally and physically tough we can be over the next few days.”

On what he tells the younger players that have not been in tournament basketball before
“Yeah, I think the biggest thing, and we talked a lot about this before the last game, is staying the course. There's a lot of up and downs over the course of a few days. Especially just if you keep winning, obviously you gotta go from all the highs of emotion of a of a big-time win to immediately starting to scout for the next team, you have limited time. So, staying the course and staying poised, which has been a factor consistent for our whole season, but it's gonna be most important coming up here in tournament play.”

On the player meeting after the Miami loss
“It's funny, I've been in college basketball a while, so I've had a few of these player-led meetings that occur in the middle of the year. And they typically follow a tough loss. But it's an important part, there's no undefeated team in the country this year, everybody's taken some tough losses on the chin and that's what happened to us at Miami. I think a lot of us were really disappointed in the way that we came out. Obviously, Coach Scheyer and the staff expressed their frustration as well, but a lot of it came from everybody on the team, I guess naturally it was some more of the older guys, myself and Jake [Grandison] and Jeremy [Roach] that took a little bit of the control in this situation just because we've had it. But the younger guys were as frustrated as we were in our performance that day. So, I think it was more so just coming together and trying to talk through where we want to go through the rest of this year. That was really a breaking point for us, in terms of kind of where we were in the standings, where we had been, and we knew that we controlled our own destiny at that point. I think we went to Virginia right after that. And we were going to play a lot of the teams at the top of the conference. So, we knew that that was going to be an imperative time to say, ‘the time is now’. Because I think it was pretty natural in terms of the development of it. But like I said, Jake, and myself and Jeremy, every year you have a few of those meetings and sometimes tempers flare, sometimes there's some tough love, but every team goes through it. And I think it's been great for us. It’s made us come closer and play more together and it's led to a few wins in a row here.”

Following Duke’s come from behind 77-69 win over Pittsburgh Wednesday Jon Scheyer who is coaching his inaugural as Duke Head Coach had this to say for his opening statement! On the decision to start switching on defense and why it was such an effective strategy. On the difference Tyrese Proctor makes when he is on the floor. On Kyle Filipowski’s 28-point, 15 rebound performance. On the crowd’s energy in Cameron tonight and how take energy to road games.

    Though,

Jon Scheyer who is coaching inaugural season as Duke Head Coach wasn’t the one to share his thoughts following Duke’s come back win over Pittsburgh 77-69 as freshman forward Kyle Filipowski, freshman guard Tyrese Proctor, freshman forward Dariq Whitehead did as well.

Freshman center Kyle Filipowski had this to say for his Opening Statement on what Jon Scheyer said to the team at halftime “I think a big thing was just turnovers in the first half for us. [Reducing the turnovers] gave us a lot more shot attempts in the second half. And also, just our defense – we let up around 40 points in the first half. That wasn’t really our type of defense. I don’t know how [many points] we let up in the second half, but it wasn’t nearly as much. That also turned into offense for us. We were all on the same page tonight and it was a really good win overall.” “We’ve just got to build off this now. We know how great of a team we can be. We know we still have a lot better things to do as well, like take care of the ball a little better, and things like that. This is a just a little sneak peak of the potential we have and how good all of us can be.”

Freshman guard Tyrese Proctor had this to say for his opening statement on the play of the Duke freshman tonight.

Especially with Jeremy [Roach] being out, on court I’ve got to be the leader – I’m playing point guard. He’sstill impacting us off the court, grabbing guys through little bits of the game and just talking to us. But when I’m on the floor, I’m going to be the most vocal to everyone and just try to get everyone on the same page. The main message I was giving to them was don’t give up and keep fighting.

“Everyone’s saying we’re all soft and all young, but we don’t let that slide and we wanted to come out and prove everyone a point – that we can hang with everyone and we can play the way we want to play. Everyone around the country’stalking about our age and how young we are, [teams] trying to out-tough us and be more physical with us, but we hear that and we just take it on and use it to build confidence. We came out and wanted to prove a point and I thought we did.” “It wascrazy. We just fed off the Crazies and the crowd tonight. It was a great atmosphere and I’m happy we got the win.”

Freshman Dariq Whitehead who unlike his freshman teammates Kyle Filipowski, Tyrese Proctor is a forward had this to say following Duke’s come back win over Pittsburgh for his opening statement, when asked if this game felt like a turning point for this Duke team.

“It’s the first day of class, the Crazies came back, so we fed off that energy and it was huge for us. I honestly feel like they changed the game, really.” “We’ve just got to continue to grow in practice, limit the turnovers. I feel like if we just continue to play as a team and just continue to share the ball, then the sky’s the limit for this team.”It should be a turning point for the team. Just us seeing how well we share the ball together, I feel like it should be huge for this team. That should continue down the road.
