As a Special Assistant, Assistant Coach, Associate Head Coach at Duke to now retired Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski Jon Scheyer helped spark the Blue Devils to two ACC championships and the 2010 NCAA title as a player from 2007-10, has helped Duke compile a 219-62 (.779) record, a national championship (2015), two Final Fours (2015, 2022) and two ACC Tournament crowns (2017, 2019) during his time as an assistant or associate head coach.He helped mentor Tyus Jones in Duke’s 2015 national title season, as the Blue Devils finished the year ranked third nationally in adjusted offensive efficiency. Jones was named the Final Four Most Outstanding Player in Indianapolis and was a first-round pick in the 2015 NBA Draft after just one college season.

In 2017, Jon Scheyer helped mold Luke Kennard into a consensus All-American after a breakout sophomore season that saw him rank second in the ACC in scoring and three-point field goal percentage. He also helped develop Frank Jackson into one of the most dynamic young guards in the country during the 2016-17 campaign.

Luke Kennard and Frank Jackson were selected 12th and 31st overall, respectively, in the 2017 NBA Draft.

After Grayson Allen finished his career in 2018 as the 12th-leading scorer in Duke history with 1,996 points, he was drafted in the first round by the Utah Jazz. Allen joined Scheyer as two of just five Blue Devils in history with 1,900 or more points, 400 or more rebounds and 400 or more assists (Grant Hill, Danny Ferry, Johnny Dawkins).

The 2019 campaign saw Tyus’ brother Tre enjoy a breakout year as a freshman by setting the program’s single-season record for assist-to-turnover ratio (3.62), while establishing himself as one of the nation’s premier defensive players. Jones’ classmate, RJ Barrett, finished his remarkable freshman season at Duke as a consensus first-team All-American, the USA Today National Player of the Year, and the overall No. 3 selection in the NBA Draft.

R.J. Barrett broke a myriad of program and ACC records, including both the Duke and conference freshman scoring record with 860 points. His 860 points were surpassed on the program’s single-season scoring list by only J.J. Redick’s 964 points as a senior in 2006. Barrett averaged 22.6 points and was the only major conference player in 2018-19 to score 13+ points in every game of the season.

Under Jon Scheyer’s guidance, Tre Jones parlayed his phenomenal freshman season into a decorated sophomore campaign that ended with him as the 2020 ACC Player of the Year, the ACC Defensive Player of the Year, and an All-American. After two seasons as the starting point guard, Jones declared for the NBA Draft, leaving Duke as the program’s career record-holder in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.88) and ranking third in assists per game (5.8).

Throughout the 2021-22 season, Jon Scheyer worked closely with ACC Freshman of the Year and consensus second-team All-American Paolo Banchero. He also helped guide second-team All-ACC pick Wendell Moore Jr., into performing as one of the nation's most complete players. Moore capped his season winning the Julius Erving Award as the nation's best small forward.

Paolo Banchero capped his collegiate career as the overall No. 1 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic, one of a record five Blue Devils drafted in 2022, including four in the first round. As a player for Duke for now retired Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski Jon Scheyer was one of the most versatile players in Duke history, concluding his playing career as the only player in school history to record at least 2,000 points, 500 rebounds, 400 assists, 250 three-point field goals and 200 steals. He averaged 14.4 points per game while scoring in double figures 114 times (sixth-most in Duke history) and leading the Blue Devils to a 115-29 (.799) record.

A two-time team captain, Jon Scheyer scored 2,077-career points and still ranks 10th on Duke’s all-time scoring list. He ranks third in Duke history in free throws made (608), fourth in free throw percentage (.861) and three-point field goals made (297) and sixth in free throw attempts (706). He played in 144 consecutive games, tied for the second-longest streak in Duke history.

“Well first of all, credit to Wake. They outplayed us. They were the hungrier team and I thought their sense of urgency coming off their game on Saturday, you could really tell, and for us, we didn't have that. They outrebounded us. I thought the free throws were key, you know, they got to the free throw line, they made 22 out of 26. That's on us. They drove the ball stronger than we did and we probably fouled a few times when we shouldn't have, but credit them. All the credit in the world goes to them. We have time now to regroup and address the things we need to do better and obviously there's a lot of them, but credit to Wake. I thought that experience, playing on the road, hurt us. For a lot of our guys it's their first time going through it but credit to them.”“Well, we’ve been healthy (injury-wise). It’s we got sick. It’s how it goes. It’s how it goes. Other teams go through it, and it’s not ideal of course. You look at that time from when you had exams but also leading up to this game practice time, we didn’t have our group together. But we did have this group. We still should have done better. I should’ve coached them better and all that. But it’s how it goes.”

“I think all this helps. Being in this environment, playing shorthanded, we played without our full team in about half our games or whatever it is. You have to keep perspective but you also have to hate the result. That’s part of what makes you a competitor, whether it’s as a coach or as a player. And so for us, I think it’s important understanding the room we have to grow and we just have to keep going. And also we need to address the things that we need to cut out now because there’s a sense of urgency. In the ACC, you have to win these games. You have to come back and win against Florida State. You have to win on the road. And so for us, I think it’s that balance. But being in this environment, playing in the games leading up to this have been really valuable for us.” No. Well, we knew the circumstances were different for us. I mean, having a 10-day break, and another 11-day break, we haven’t, that wasn’t necessarily by plan if it wasn’t just how it worked out this year with the way our schedule was. But for us, I thought we would be ready to go. We’ve have a lot of first this year. And this was our first road game. And I thought we were, when we missed some shots, we were a little, that impacted our defense and taken aback by it. And we can’t be that fragile. We need to be toughminded and defend, which is who we’ve been most of the year. So for me, I think it’s a great chance to really look at everything and go back to the drawing board and address the team when we come back and make a plan to move forward. But it’s disappointing obviously to lose this one.”Our defense has always started with guarding the ball. And they just drove us like crazy, you know. They do a good job of moving and spacing, and they just got in our paint at will. We just need to be solid and guard the ball. You know, it’s hard, you’re playing out of rotations really the whole game with that. It starts there, obviously you can miss Dereck [Lively’s] rim protection. Him just being out there, changes the game. But Ryan [Young], I thought he really battled, what he did. We didn’t give him the ball enough. He basically, he almost had a double-double, Jaylen Blakes really guarded and gave us great energy. We have to play like those two guys did tonight. And I thought they set a great example. But we need everybody to play that way.”

“It’s inexcusable. It’s toughness and it’s effort. It’s not much else that goes into rebounding and we know that we take pride in that being a strength of ours. And it was embarrassing that we couldn’t win that tonight. And as Coach [Scheyer] mentioned, it was all effort and they out-toughed us and they came out right from the jump and they wanted it more than us.”“They were able to get in our paint pretty easily and that’s something that we’ve been able to do successfully in the past is come out and guard teams and take guys out of their games. And they were able to get to the free throw line very easily against us and get into the paint and maneuver. And again, it’s just offensively things come and go, but defense has to be a thing that remains stable for us across the board no matter how we’re playing, how we’re shooting the ball, our defense can’t waver. So again, I think the first thing, they got to the free throw line very easily and they were able to get into the paint.”“They’re a pretty different team than what we’ve played so far and they’ve a lot of key guys. We knew that Appleby, coming in, he was a really good distributor. I think he finished with eight assists tonight. Obviously he’s a good player and they were able to get a few lobs like that and obviously they beat us in the rebounding battle, but I didn’t think, we’ve played against big teams, I don’t think size has affected us too much in the past. I think truly it was just that we came out lethargic tonight, they jumped on us, and we never could dig ourselves out of the hole that we put ourselves in in the first half. They’ve been right there with some of the best teams in the country and we have a lot of respect for them. But that was not a good enough performance or effort on our part and that’s on me. For us to learn from it, we’ve got to grow and change. I take responsibility for that as a coach. This is disappointing, but credit to them. I knew this when I took the job that there’s gonna be some moments like this where people can doubt you, they can doubt us as a team, sometimes the best way to learn is to experience it. For this group in particular, to experience this, to experience playing on the road, while you wish you were 2-0 on the road or 4-0 in conference, but that’s not how it works. For us it’s all about how you learn from it and that’s how I’m gonna approach it.”

Finally, we could string some stops together, and that translated into some good offense for us. We're still getting acclimated to playing with each other. This has been a tough stretch, a lot of games: more games than practice. We just need to keep building, quick turnaround again for Tuesday. I just want to say Jaylen Blakes, man, he's done a big-time job for us. He's coming in every game giving us energy. Dariq (Whitehead) did some really good things. He's still getting back in the flow. Really each one of our guys have played, stepped up, and contributed. That's going to be who we are all season. Happy to answer any questions, but proud of the win.”I think our ability to guard one-on-one allows us to stay out of rotations as much as possible. We did give up some shots and they missed some shots. We did get lucky with a couple things tonight. But, we try to mix it up. We have some guys that really can attack downhill. Sometimes [the wing is] empty, sometimes it's not for certain games, that's just scouting. Jai Lucas had the scouting and did a great job with game plan. That is one of the things he talked about. Dereck is different, so our offense is going to be different when Dereck's in the game; versus Ryan or when we've had Flip [Kylie Filipowski] at the five today. So, the versatility and the ability to play differently with different lineups, is an advantage and something we have to continue to evaluate, look at, and continue to improve on based on how defenses play us.”“We have two games in the next week, but then we have a little bit of a break. Then we have another game, and then a break in there. I think the practice time will do us well, and also just to recover and get our bodies back a little bit. “We knew Boston College was going to be a very physical team. They might not jump out at you on film, but they’re going to always play hard. Obviously, one of their better guards– their best player pretty much – he went out early. I don’t even know what happened to him, but he’s a helluva guard going downhill, plays defense, has great hands. We wanted to impose our will early. It got into kind of an up-and-down game, and then kind of like the last four minutes of the first half, we took the lead and kind of put our foot on their neck.” “Just playing inside-out is a big thing for us. If our shot’s not falling, we’ve got big guys who can go to work inside – D-Live [Dereck Lively III], Ryan [Young], Flip [Kyle Filipowski], even Mark [Mitchell] and Dariq [Whitehead] will go inside a little bit. So we’ve got so many things going on inside that we can’t just rely on our jump shots. I think we did that tonight. We’re still trying to figure out our team.”“Just him ripping to the basket, being explosive, trying to get fouled, and just not relying on his jumper. Using his body, playing defense, being active, and talking too. The biggest thing for him is just his confidence. His confidence has to keep going up. He can’t be overthinking anything out there. He’s just got to play his game. I think he’ll be fine. He hasn’t got his rhythm going, so it’s kind of natural to think about, ‘I need to do this or do what Coach [Jon Scheyer] is saying.’ Just play out there – that’s the biggest thing.”“I think we’re really getting there. We’ve got a lot of young guys and we’re transforming. This November we went 7-2, so you can’t complain about that. We’ve got a lot of young guys learning. I think [the important things are] just taking it game after game, don’t look ahead, don’t look at what happened in the past, stay in the present and stay hungry.”

“Just being a versatile weapon. On defense, I guard one through four, and sometimes I’ll switch onto the five.
