Following Duke’s 63-57 win in inaugural meeting 2022-2023 regular season Saturday in Durham Jon Scheyer who is coaching his inaugural season as Duke Head Coach had this to say for his opening statement. On the huge impact Dereck Lively had on game even without a prominent scoring performance. On the affect a win like this can have on the confidence of a young team. On players making winning plays down the stretch , even after playing extensive minutes “Just, I think, the will to win. They just had a big time will to win. Even talking to them before the game, they just had a look. We’ve gotten tougher from the experiences we’ve gone through. I think we’ve gotten closer when you go through some stuff. Whether you lose a tough one, whether you don’t play as well. We’ve just blocked it all out and kept pushing. We have to do the same thing now in a different way, because this is obviously a great win for us but we play Miami in 48 hours. I justcredit the will that our guys have. Itcomesfrom within. Credit to them justcontinuing to work, continuing to believe, and understanding what it takes to win.” On the physicality of the game! It was a physical game, on both ends. That was a huge thing for us, going into this game. They get to the foul line more than anybody. For us, just making them earn it. You know, [Caleb]Love hitsome tough shots; make him earn it. Don’t just give them free throws. They’re automaticfree throw shooters. [Armando] Bacot puts a lot of pressure on you at the free throw line. I credit Dereck with him. I thought we were fortunate they also missed some open looks. It’s a one possession game. I was proud of our guys for not being handsy. Playing without using their hands, and also being physical without fouling. That’s something, as a young team, we’ve had to learn. We’ve gotten pushed around at time throughout the year, but, for us, we’ve learned how to do that much better.

Though, Head Coach Jon Scheyer wasn’t the only Head Coach to share his thoughts following Duke’s 63-57 win over North Carolina as North Carolina Head Coach Hubert Davis did as well on shooting 27 three pointers . On how Dereck Lively changed the game. On what Coach will tell team ahead of Tuesday’s match up with Wake Forest. On team morale compared to last season.

don't think just because we shot 27 makes it we turned into a three-point shooting team. The stat that I'm looking at, is that going into the game we had shot 150 more free throws than any other opponent in our conference. We shot three; zero in the second half. That is what I'm looking at.”He [Dereck Lively] is a fantastic player; Duke is a fantastic defensive team. They pressure you. They do a great job with their quickness moving their feet. Dereck is one of the best, if not the best even if he doesn't block it, his length and his athleticism can alter it. We went to the free throw line three times, and we shoot 150 more than any team in the conference. “There is no other option. Yes. I don't know what else to tell the team. We got to play awake on Tuesday. Crap. This is basketball; this is life. Let's go back to work tomorrow. Let's get back to work. Let's work hard. Let's do it with energy, effort, passion, enthusiasm. Let's go show up on Monday. Let's work hard: energy, effort, passion, enthusiasm, togetherness, closeness, hunger and thirst. Let's play on Tuesday against a great, unbelievable Wake Forest team.”That is difficult. I think I know where you're coming from. It's just a difficult question for me to answer, and this is the reason: I don't think about last year at all. I just don't. For me, it just has been no benefit. I don't think it has any benefit for us moving forward. I think I've said this to you guys before. The number one thing that I learned as a second-year head coach is that every year is different. I think our guys love playing with each other. I think our guys love doing this together. One of the things that I always tell them is to find joy and how hard it is to be successful, whether it's individually or as a team. I think our guys really enjoy playing together. That's why they came back.

Following Duke’s 63-57 win in inaugural meeting of 2022-2023 regular season with North Carolina Saturday junior guard Jeremy Roach, freshman center Dereck Lively II , freshman guard Tyrese Proctor shared their thoughts.

Jeremy Roach shared his thoughts about Dereck Lively II on the play he scored on a drive to put Duke up four points with 23 seconds left in the game. When asked if this win was particularly losing to North Carolina at home then in Final Four.

“He’s been working his tail off since he got here. Obviously, he’s had some ups and downs at the beginning of the season, but he’s come in every day, worked, lifting. It’s showing off now and I’m just so happy for him.”“It was a ball screen between me and Flip [Kyle Filipowski]. I told him to slip it. We knew [North Carolina] would kind of mess up on their talking, which they did, and I think two guys went to Flip, and I kind of got an easy lane when [Armando] Bacot was looking for the lob. I got an easy lane, and we executed it perfectly“Definitely, it was a little bit personal for me, with what happened last year obviously. I just wanted to come out here and do everything I can to get this win. It kind of eases [the pain of last year] a little bit. Obviously, we’ve still got more work to do. We play them again, so we can’t just think about what we did last time. We’ve got to go out there and do it again.” “This is a rivalry. We take it a game at a time, but, obviously, this game definitely has a little more juice to it. I’m just happy that these guys got the chance to experience this rivalry, experience this atmosphere, and I’m glad that we came out with the win.”

Dereck Lively II had this to say for his opening statement It was a great atmosphere to be in. You know both teams are going to give it their all, and it’s just a great competition to be in. I’m just glad to be here. I’m glad to compete with my brothers. When asked about his ability to make huge contributions tonight without score many points.

“That’s just something I’ve always been able to do. I haven’t been able to be as offensive-driven as every other player here, but I’ve got my own way to give to this team. I get my rebounds, I get my blocks, [and] I do the dirty work.”

“According to article on goduke.com”

“I think rebounds was a huge thing. D-Live [Dereck Lively II] did a great job on the boards. The 50/50 balls was next – we got a lot of loose balls that I think a few games ago we wouldn’t have gotten. [We were] just locking in on that in the film [room] and really emphasizing that before the game.”

On play of Dereck Lively II “D-Live [Dereck Lively II] worked his butt off all night. He had a big-time matchup and an experienced guy in Armando [Bacot], great rebounder. He just did his job. He was physical the whole night. His main goal coming into this was just get [Bacot] off the boards by boxing him out and letting us get all the rebounds for him. All the rebounds that me and [Jeremy] Roach got and all the guys, it’s his work. We just got all the cleanup. And I think he had eight blocks orsomething at the end of the game. It’s just crazy. He had a great game. I think his confidence was there the whole time, but he’s starting to get into a rhythm now.” “We’ve had a lot of ups and downs this season, but we kept strong faces the whole game and were really close late in that game. I think in the last five minutes our huddles and our talk were really, really key, and everyone was just locked in on the final target.” “The atmosphere wascrazy. It was the loudest game I’ve ever been in in my life. It wascrazy – I couldn’t hear myself think and I’m just so happy we got the win.”

Following Duke’s 62-57 win over North Carolina Saturday Duke Head Coach Jon Scheyer who is coaching his inaugural season as Duke Head Coach had this to say for his opening statement, on Kyle Filipowski’s slow start and how he overcame it. On Jeremy Roach last minute basket. On how much confidence can give the team for the postseason.

“Thought we were going to see their bestshot tonight with just what they’ve gone through and we knew they were going to be ready to play, and they were. And I thought we matched their physicality to start. And really just made, our players made some big-time winning plays down the stretch. Mark Mitchell, he probably had two of the biggest plays of anybody on our team all year. He had two rebounds in traffic that were, it was a man rebound. Both of them. And they came at a key time. They do a great job crashing the boards. And then he probably had the biggest basket of the game, we got down five. He had a great drive to cut it to three. And Jeremy [Roach], down the stretch, what he’s done. He’s been that guy for us. He didn’t have his best stuff tonight and still found a way just to will it in with that basket to go up three, I think it was. And then [Kyle Filipowski], big-time free throws. Really proud of this effort. Proud of this win. For us to grind back this later part of the year, our guys have stuck together, continued to fight, continued to believe and it’s shown up with what they’ve done on the court. It was a little bit of a disjointed first half because of the foul trouble. When Dereck [Lively II] is not on the court, and Ryan [Young] did a really good job keeping us afloat, but it just changes our team on the defensive end. And Flip, he’s been right there. Him and Jeremy [Roach] have been our two best players all year. So, he didn’t get off to that start and settled him down. And come back in, on the road, and to have 22 and 13 after that start, it says a lot about who he is. The competitor. And he’s a big-time winner. He really helped us, middle of the second half, we just had a hard time scoring. And they’re a really good defensive team. I don’t think they get enough credit. The numbers would show it and who they’ve been on the defensive end. But for Flip, we just went to him. And he found a way to manufacture points when we needed them the most.”“I did say go get us one. We’ve got great trust in Jeremy. Doesn’t matter what happened for the 35 minutes before. Him and [Filipowski] have had a great two-man game. I thought, they play in drop coverage and they kind of make you play in-between. They don’t let you get to the rim and you kind of have to hitsome of those touch shots and floaterstoo. Thought Jeremy wasn’t as decisive as he normally is, and that last play, he was decisive. And he’s a winner. Game’s on the line, he’s going to go. You trust the ball in his hands.Regardless of the double-bye or not, ofcourse we want the double-bye and that’s great. I think it’s more important what we’ve done as a team, to your point, and sticking together. I think the ACC, the lack of credit that we’ve gotten this year, we’ve played in this stretch especially, since the last time we played [Miami], we’ve played some really good teams. I’m proud of what we’ve done. Our defense has been top-10 in the country in the month of February. We’ve been as consistent as anybody in the country down the stretch. And we’ve been through this enough, or at least I have, just being on the staff here, where no matter how you end the year, postseason is different. We need to get refreshed. This was a physical game. And we had to do some things to gut it out. But now we need to refocus, understanding postseason is a different animal. It’s one-and-done time and there’s a lot to learn from this. But the belief is there for us, and that’s as important as anything.

Though,

Duke Head Coach Jon Scheyer who is coaching his inaugural season as Duke Head Coach wasn’t the only Head Coach to share his thoughts following Duke sweeping North Carolina in 2022-2023 regular season as North Carolina Head Coach Hubert Davis did as well on the final North Carolina possession. On if this game had similarities to the first meeting against Duke this season. On the teams (North Carolina’s) confidence in shooting. "We called a play that gave us an option for two looks to attack the basket and two looks on both sides to get a three. I felt like they (Duke) defended it really well and we just didn't get a clean look off of that shot.""I felt like it was very similar to a number of our games. In the second half we took the four-point lead and it has been a consistent theme all year where in that time where it is a great opportunity to extend it, there has been a lot of timesthis year where we haven't been able to do it. We take the four-point lead and give Mark Mitchell a drive to his left for a layup. Then, the next possession we give a lob to (Dereck) Lively and he rolls every time off of a ball screen. I wouldn't say it was consistent with the first game in Durham but more consistent with the close losses we have suffered this year.""I thought we had wide open looks from three that we didn't make but more importantly I thought we had layups that we missed. We missed a lot of shots around the basket. In the first half, Pete (Nance) missed a layup, Caleb (Love) missed a dunk and we only got one point from it, and Armando (Bacot) missed a layup. I felt like we had opportunities around the rim to be able to convert and we just weren't able to do it.

Following Duke’s 62-57 win on Saturday sweeping North Carolina in 2022-2023 regular season Duke junior Jeremy Roach had this to say on how much confidence a win like this can give this team heading into postseason

“I mean, there’s a lot of confidence. Because you know how the tournament goes, most of the games are going to be like this. Making it out of these big-time wins and close games like that, with these younger guys, it gives us a lot of confidence”

Freshman guard Tyrese Proctor had this to say for his opening statement following Duke’s 62-57 win on Saturday sweeping North Carolina in 2022-2023 regular season. On if the team handled adversity better now then earlier in the season. On what he’s done to improve his defense as the season progresses “Yeah definitely. We’ve gone through it before. [Dereck Lively II] is a heck of a defender, his presence on defense is huge. That’s going to come with a couple fouls and unfortunately a couple fouls gotcalled tonight. And we’ve got his back. Ryan [Young] came in and played big minutes and Ryan came back in and got huge rebounds.”“I just think taking pride is a big thing. Obviously I don’t want my man scoring, I don’t want them to score. That’s going to help us win games. Coach [Scheyer] emphasizes us playing and locking in on defense and just following on offense. So I just try and take pride in that.”

Freshman forward Kyle Filipowski had this to say following Duke sweeping North Carolina in 2022-2023 regular season about how it feels to get win at North Carolina to end the season. (regular season) On what the celebration was like after the game.

It’s a great feeling. I mean, I know it’s a little more personal with Jeremy [Roach], with the way things ended last year,so just wanted to have his back throughout this season. They had something to play for this game but so do we. We were going out there to get that double-bye, going into the ACC Tournament, I believe we just did that. It’s a great feeling. Just especially where we started the season with some hard road losses, now we’re just staying the course and finishing strong on the road.”“It was awesome. It was amazing. We did what we had to, to put an end to the season. We’re putting ourselves in a real great spot for the postseason. So now we just got to go on to the next one, focus and put our heads down.
