New York Looses Again, This Time To Philadelphia

Losing has been the story pretty much throughout the 2018 so far for the New York Giants and on a short week they lost to their NFC East foe Philadelphia.

Entering Thursday night with a chance to reshape their season and insert themselves into the NFC East race, the Giants fell further behind in a 34-13 loss to the defending Super Bowl champion Eagles. “according to https://www.giants.com/news/instant-analysis-giants-fall-to-eagles-34-13

After throwing just one interception in his first four games, Eli Manning did it in three consecutive quarters over the last two games. He opened Thursday night with an interception on the second play of the game. Jordan Hicks got a hand on it first, deflecting it into the hands of fellow Eagles linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill. Getting the ball at the Giants 16, Philadelphia quickly turned it into seven points with a Carson Wentz touchdown pass to Alshon Jeffery, putting the Giants on their heels early. Manning’s interception was intended for Scott Simonson, one of two tight ends (Garrett Dickerson the other) playing up in place of the injured Evan Engram (knee) and Rhett Ellison (foot). “according to https://www.giants.com/news/instant-analysis-giants-fall-to-eagles-34-13

*The Giants started 0-for-8 on third down a week after going 0-for-7 in Carolina, where they thought they turned a corner with season highs in yards and points. Manning was sacked four times and hit 13 times by the Eagles’ defense. “according to https://www.giants.com/news/instant-analysis-giants-fall-to-eagles-34-13

*The Eagles entered with the second-ranked rush defense, giving up just 66.4 yards per game. Rookie running back Saquon Barkley eclipsed that in the first half. The second overall draft pick made it look like his college days on Thursday night, highlighted by a 55-yard catch-and-run as he zigzagged through traffic. He finished the game with 13 carries for 130 yards, including a 50-yard touchdown. He added nine receptions for 99 yards, bringing his scrimmage total for the game up to 229. In the process, he joined Kansas City’s Kareem Hunt as the only players in NFL history with at least 100 scrimmage yards in the first six games of their career. “according to https://www.giants.com/news/instant-analysis-giants-fall-to-eagles-34-13

*The Giants have now given up 30 points in three consecutive games for the first time since the final three weeks of the 2015 season. The Eagles, who were averaging 20.6 points per game heading into Week 6, were 9-for-16 on third down and 4-for-6 in the red zone. “according to https://www.giants.com/news/instant-analysis-giants-fall-to-eagles-34-13

*Outside linebacker Olivier Vernon made his 2018 debut. The seventh-year veteran had not played this season after suffering an ankle injury in practice in late August. Vernon, who has 44 career sacks, came back to a Giants defense tied for a league-low six sacks heading into Week 6. He recorded a sack in the third quarter, the only one of the game. “according to https://www.giants.com/news/instant-analysis-giants-fall-to-eagles-34-13

*Aldrick Rosas dealt with a quad injury on his kicking leg that was bad enough to have the team add a kicker to the practice squad as a backup plan. Even with the short week, Rosas played but missed his first field goal of the season on a 52-yard attempt (short) with 23 seconds left in the first half. He is now 13-for-14 on the season. “according to https://www.giants.com/news/instant-analysis-giants-fall-to-eagles-34-13

*The Giants continued to have adventures in the return game. Jawill Davis had a close call on the opening kickoff, but the refs overturned a called fumble that was recovered by Philadelphia. Odell Beckham Jr. also muffed a punt one week after having a ball hit off the back of his leg that Carolina recovered in the end zone for a touchdown. “according to https://www.giants.com/news/instant-analysis-giants-fall-to-eagles-34-13

With the loss, New York drops to 1-5 and 0-2 in the division and are last in the NFC East while Philadelphia who is also a member of that division improves to 3-3 and 1-0 in the NFC East. “according to http://www.espn.com/nfl/standings

New York will now return to the road as they visit Atlanta who is a member of the NFC South on Monday October 22nd.

Kick-off is set for 8:15pm from Mercedes Benz Stadium. The game will be televised on ESPN. “according to https://www.giants.com/schedule/
