Daniel Jones, New York Aim To Extend Win Streak As They Host Minnesota

Since Daniel Jones became the starter for the New York Giants they have won two straight games at Tampa Bay and against Washington.

On Sunday Daniel Jones will look to lead New York to their third straight win when the New York Giants who are a member of the NFC East host the Minnesota Vikings who are a member of the NFC North who will look to bounce back from their loss a week ago.

New York and Minnesota both come into the game with a record of 2-2.

As for New York’s previous game,

They beat their division rival Washington last Sunday.

In their first three games, they had been outscored in the first two quarters, 70-24, while getting the best of their opponents in the second half, 39-24. But they were victorious in just one of those games, and they needed an epic comeback last week at Tampa Bay to earn that. “according to https://www.giants.com/news/defense-shines-in-giants-24-3-win-over-redskins

But the Giants took control early on Sunday in MetLife Stadium. The defense stole the ball away on the game’s third play. The offense scored a touchdown on its first possession. And the Giants never looked back while rolling to a not-that-close 24-3 thrashing of the Washington Redskins that left them with a 2-2 record at the quarter pole of the NFL season.”according to https://www.giants.com/news/defense-shines-in-giants-24-3-win-over-redskins

“I think our defense did a terrific job,” coach Pat Shurmur said. “We made a few tweaks, I don’t think we made a lot of massive changes, but we made a few tweaks this week that I think settled our guys down, helped them be more comfortable. They were more disruptive, (and) we got pressure on the quarterback.””according to https://www.giants.com/news/defense-shines-in-giants-24-3-win-over-redskins

Washington’s three points, eight first downs, 176 total yards, 55 rushing yards, 121 passing yards and 23:51 time of possession were far and away season lows for a Giants opponent. The three-game averages entering the game were 31.3 points, 23.7 first downs, 460.3 total yards,128.0 rushing yards and 332.3 passing yards.”according to https://www.giants.com/news/defense-shines-in-giants-24-3-win-over-redskins

The Giants also intercepted four passes and recorded three sacks of two Washington quarterbacks. And they did all that without one of their defensive captains, linebacker Alec Ogletree, who was inactive with a hamstring injury. “according to https://www.giants.com/news/defense-shines-in-giants-24-3-win-over-redskins

“Our point this week was to start off fast and finish even stronger,” defensive tackle B.J. Hill said. “That’s what we came out and did. It’s exciting. We came out and did our thing. We got some turnovers, three and outs, and that’s how we like to play.” “according to https://www.giants.com/news/defense-shines-in-giants-24-3-win-over-redskins

“We played great,” cornerback Janoris Jenkins said. “We played all around great football: defense, special teams, offense. I just think we started fast this week and we kept our feet on the gas.””according to https://www.giants.com/news/defense-shines-in-giants-24-3-win-over-redskins

The two key performers on offense played a total of nine snaps on that unit in the home opener just two weeks ago. In his second start, quarterback Daniel Jones completed 23 of 31 passes for 225 yards, one touchdown and his first two career interceptions, both by cornerback Quinton Dunbar. Wayne Gallman, substituting for the injured Saquon Barkley, led all rushers with 63 yards on a career-high 18 carries, and scored touchdowns on a six-yard reception and a one-yard run on the Giants’ first two offensive possessions to give the Giants what proved to be an insurmountable 14-0 lead.”according to https://www.giants.com/news/defense-shines-in-giants-24-3-win-over-redskins

“The whole focus was to come out fast,” Gallman said. “You know we don’t want to come out hot in the second half. We want to come out hot in the first half, so the focus was just getting that first drive going and we did. We got it done.” “according to https://www.giants.com/news/defense-shines-in-giants-24-3-win-over-redskins

“Wayne had a great game,” Jones said. “We had a lot of confidence in him, and I think he’s a really good player. I don’t think anyone was surprised by how he played. But certainly, he was a huge piece of this win today.””according to https://www.giants.com/news/defense-shines-in-giants-24-3-win-over-redskins

The offense scored just three points in its last eight possessions (not counting the end-of-game kneel-downs). But the defense kept Washington from threatening all day.”according to https://www.giants.com/news/defense-shines-in-giants-24-3-win-over-redskins

Fittingly, the defense scored the third touchdown, on a 32-yard interception return by safety Jabrill Peppers.”according to https://www.giants.com/news/defense-shines-in-giants-24-3-win-over-redskins

“It felt good, we had a great week of preparation, I watched extensive film because I wanted to take the challenge of guarding (tight end) Vernon Davis real personal,” Peppers said. “I recognized the set, I knew they liked the over routes out of that formation. I trusted my gut, slipped underneath it, he tried to get it out, I switched my arm and saw nothing but daylight in front of me, it had to be six.””according to https://www.giants.com/news/defense-shines-in-giants-24-3-win-over-redskins

The defense had plenty of other key contributors. Rookie linebacker Ryan Connelly intercepted his second pass in as many weeks on the game’s opening series and registered his first career sack when he tackled Case Keenum for a two-yard loss on Washington’s next possession. But he suffered a potentially serious knee injury in the second half.”according to https://www.giants.com/news/defense-shines-in-giants-24-3-win-over-redskins

Jenkins, whose coverage skills were targeted for criticism after Mike Evans finished with 190 receiving yards in Tampa last week, twice intercepted rookie substitute quarterback Dwayne Haskins, the third two-pick game of his career and second with the Giants.”according to https://www.giants.com/news/defense-shines-in-giants-24-3-win-over-redskins

Markus Golden, Oshane Ximines, Dalvin Tomlinson and Tuzar Skipper each had a half-sack.”according to https://www.giants.com/news/defense-shines-in-giants-24-3-win-over-redskins

David Mayo started for Ogletree and led the team with eight tackles (four solo).”according to https://www.giants.com/news/defense-shines-in-giants-24-3-win-over-redskins

“Anytime you can come out and perform together at a high level, it's motivation for everybody,” Golden said. “You get to watch the film, watch everybody flying around. I felt the energy. Everybody was celebrating and having a good time. That's always good and it's always good for everybody to feed off of.””according to https://www.giants.com/news/defense-shines-in-giants-24-3-win-over-redskins

“They did just a really, really terrific job,” Shurmur said. “They were about their business this week, they kept the noise out, and I watched it. I watched their preparation this week and I really felt like we on defense this week made improvements on the practice field that then showed up in the game. Now what we have to do is continue to build on that.” “according to https://www.giants.com/news/defense-shines-in-giants-24-3-win-over-redskins

Unlike the New York Giants Minnesota lost their previous game as they lost to Chicago.

The longest drive of the day came late in the fourth quarter, when the Vikings went 92 yards in 4:08 and finished with a touchdown by Dalvin Cook. “according to https://www.vikings.com/news/vikings-bears-ground-game-offense-unable-get-going-in-chicago

The 2-point conversion attempt that followed was no good, and the Vikings ran out of chances. “according to https://www.vikings.com/news/vikings-bears-ground-game-offense-unable-get-going-in-chicago

Minnesota chipped away on its first drive, converting a third down early on with a 13-yard completion from Kirk Cousins to running back Cook. But Chicago had a recipe for success against the previously dominant Vikings run game, and Cook carried four times for just three yards during the drive.”according to https://www.vikings.com/news/vikings-bears-ground-game-offense-unable-get-going-in-chicago

Cousins threw a deep pass toward the end zone, attempting to catch receiver Adam Thielen in stride, but the ball sailed just past his grasp. “according to https://www.vikings.com/news/vikings-bears-ground-game-offense-unable-get-going-in-chicago

“It was something that we had up, have had up, and he made a great read of finding me open, and just didn't complete the pass,” Thielen said. “It's as simple as that.””according to https://www.vikings.com/news/vikings-bears-ground-game-offense-unable-get-going-in-chicago

"Things like that happen in a football game. We just have to be able to respond and forget about it, move on to the next play,” center Garrett Bradbury said. “There's a lot of things that didn't go our way, but there were some that did, so we just have to build on the good and improve on the bad and move forward.” “according to https://www.vikings.com/news/vikings-bears-ground-game-offense-unable-get-going-in-chicago

Vikings trailed 10-0 entering the third quarter and got several more chances in the second half but with no better results.”according to https://www.vikings.com/news/vikings-bears-ground-game-offense-unable-get-going-in-chicago

Bears outside linebacker Khalil Mack sacked Cousins for a loss of 7 on the very first snap of the second half and forced a fumble by the quarterback. The ball was recovered by defensive end Nick Williams. “according to https://www.vikings.com/news/vikings-bears-ground-game-offense-unable-get-going-in-chicago

On their next possession, the Vikings went three-and-out. “according to https://www.vikings.com/news/vikings-bears-ground-game-offense-unable-get-going-in-chicago

Cousins was sacked a total of six times, two of which resulted in fumbles, for a combined loss of 51 yards.”according to https://www.vikings.com/news/vikings-bears-ground-game-offense-unable-get-going-in-chicago

Vikings Head Coach Mike Zimmer said that ball security had been a point of emphasis going into the game. “according to https://www.vikings.com/news/vikings-bears-ground-game-offense-unable-get-going-in-chicago

“I talked about it last night in a meeting, and I would say we’ve got to protect the football in the pocket,” Zimmer said. “They’re big at stripping the balls in the pocket. We’ve got to do a better job there and make sure we do that. We didn’t do that today. “according to https://www.vikings.com/news/vikings-bears-ground-game-offense-unable-get-going-in-chicago

“We’ve got to secure the ball when he starts getting heat around him. That’s a part of it,” he later added. “I think the one he was trying to throw, and the other one, it got away from him around his midsection, it looked like.” “according to https://www.vikings.com/news/vikings-bears-ground-game-offense-unable-get-going-in-chicago

Cousins finished the game 27-of-36 passing for 233 yards and a passer rating of 91.6. He did not throw a touchdown or an interception. “according to https://www.vikings.com/news/vikings-bears-ground-game-offense-unable-get-going-in-chicago

Minnesota entered the game knowing it would likely be harder to run against a stout Chicago defense, and that was the case. After racking up 375 rushing yards over the first three weeks, Cook accrued just 35 yards on the ground at Soldier Field.”according to https://www.vikings.com/news/vikings-bears-ground-game-offense-unable-get-going-in-chicago

The fact that the Vikings didn’t respond through the air was most aggravating aspect of the game for Thielen. “according to https://www.vikings.com/news/vikings-bears-ground-game-offense-unable-get-going-in-chicago

“We knew that was going to happen at some point. At some point, you're not going to be able to run the ball for 180 yards, even with the best running back in the NFL,” Thielen said. “And that's when you have to be able to throw the ball, you have to be able to make plays, you have to be able to hit the deep balls. You have to do that, because otherwise it's too easy for teams to just tee up and rush the quarterback.”according to https://www.vikings.com/news/vikings-bears-ground-game-offense-unable-get-going-in-chicago

“We have to be able to run the ball and pass the ball,” he added emphatically. “In this league, you cannot be one-dimensional; it's just too easy to defend.””according to https://www.vikings.com/news/vikings-bears-ground-game-offense-unable-get-going-in-chicago

Thielen recorded just two catches for six yards on the night. Diggs led the team in receiving with seven catches for 108 yards, but the bulk of his targets and largest gains didn’t occur until late in the ball game. “according to https://www.vikings.com/news/vikings-bears-ground-game-offense-unable-get-going-in-chicago

Asked about not throwing to that duo more often and earlier, Cousins said that “every play is different.” “according to https://www.vikings.com/news/vikings-bears-ground-game-offense-unable-get-going-in-chicago

“One time we tried to take a shot to Adam, and they doubled him, and I checked it down to C.J. Ham,” Cousins explained. “Another time, Kyle Fuller plays a trail technique and tips the ball. Adam’s open, but he comes underneath it and tips the ball. [Danny] Trevathan was coming off the middle push route, so I couldn’t lead Adam too far in there, so that was a tough one. Again, good job by the Bears.”according to https://www.vikings.com/news/vikings-bears-ground-game-offense-unable-get-going-in-chicago

“I think other than that, you miss the one on third down early in the game, and then from there, until I watch the film, it would be hard for me to tell you how many of them, ‘Hey, the coverage is taking them away,’ or I’m progressing, or the pass rush is affecting the ability to wait on them because they’re running the deeper developing routes that are longer developing and require more time,” Cousins continued.”according to https://www.vikings.com/news/vikings-bears-ground-game-offense-unable-get-going-in-chicago

While Chicago’s defensive prowess wasn’t denied, it also wasn’t used as an excuse by the Vikings.”according to https://www.vikings.com/news/vikings-bears-ground-game-offense-unable-get-going-in-chicago

Player after player took responsibility for the underwhelming performance and ultimate loss. “according to https://www.vikings.com/news/vikings-bears-ground-game-offense-unable-get-going-in-chicago

“We shot ourselves in the foot,” said Thielen. “Obviously the Bears came out playing, and we didn't.” “according to https://www.vikings.com/news/vikings-bears-ground-game-offense-unable-get-going-in-chicago

Blame also was not placed on Cousins by any of his teammates. “according to https://www.vikings.com/news/vikings-bears-ground-game-offense-unable-get-going-in-chicago

Kick-Off is set for 1:00pm from Metlife Stadium. The game will be televised on Fox.
