NC State Is Hosting Clemson Today In Raleigh

The last time NC State hosted Clemson in Raleigh was on November 9, 2019!

In that game NC State lost to then #5 ranked Clemson by a score of 55-10!

NC State got on the scoreboard on the first possession of the second half, as RB Zonovan Knight galloped in from 53 yards out to cap a 5-play, 75-yard drive.

Knight finished with a career-best 139 yards on 12 carries. QB Devin Leary was 14-of-29 for 166 yards.

The home loss was the first of the season for NC State, and just the third in the last 18 games at Carter-Finley Stadium.

Travis Etienne added three total touchdowns to bring his career total to 54, breaking C.J. Spiller’s record for career touchdowns (51). Etienne finished the game with 112 rushing yards on 14 attempts, and hauled in three receptions for 31 yards. With 50 career rushing touchdowns, Etienne is now tied with Louisville’s Lamar Jackson for second-most career rushing touchdowns in conference history.

Trevor Lawrence completed 20-of-27 passes for 276 yards and three touchdowns, becoming the first Clemson quarterback to pass for three touchdowns in five consecutive games. The sophomore also rushed for a career-high 59 yards on eight attempts and found the end zone once on the ground to bring his season total touchdown responsibility to 30 (23 passing, 7 rushing). Justyn Ross and Tee Higgins each recorded 33-yard touchdown receptions. Offensive lineman John Simpson scored his first career touchdown in the first quarter, scoring on a one-yard handoff.

The Clemson defense forced four N.C. State turnovers. Xavier Thomas, Chad Smith and Tyler Davis all recorded fumble recoveries. The defense allowed 290 total yards and held the Wolfpack to 124 rushing yards.

Today NC State is hosting Clemson who this week is ranked ninth in the AP Top 25 poll in North Carolina’s state capital!

NC State comes into the game with a record of 2-1 and is fifth in the Atlantic Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference!

Zonovan Knight and Ricky Person, Jr. were in the backfield together Knight had 104 yards on 11 carries with a touchdown while Person, Jr carried 8 times for 41 yards and a score.

On the Wolfpack's second possession of the game, five of the eight plays were handoffs to Knight. He gained 56 yards, including a 42-yard carry into the red zone and capped the drive with the game's first score.

With the run game clicking early, it was time for QB Devin Leary to go to work in the air. He picked apart the Paladins in the first half connecting on 23 of 29 passes, three touchdowns, and a rushing score.

On his touchdown run, Leary got a great seal block by Knight to clear the path.

"Once we got to our rhythm and were able to execute on plays, it's just a constant flow of executing and making the right plays, right blocks," Leary explained. "When you get out of that rhythm, it's difficult."

One play to remember was a 42-yard connection from Leary to freshman WR Anthony Smith down the sideline. The young wideout made a great adjustment on the ball to make the catch and then dove into the end zone. It's a prime example of a receiver helping out his quarterback.

Clemson comes into the game with NC State with a record of 2-1 1-0 in the Atlantic Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Georgia Tech who unlike Clemson is a member of the Coastal Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference where they won by a score of 14-8 last Saturday in Clemson South Carolina.

In that game Clemson freshman running back Will Shipley scored two touchdowns as the No. 6 ranked Clemson Tigers (2-1, 1-0 ACC) used a late defensive stand to hold on for a 14-8 victory over Georgia Tech (1-2, 0-1 ACC), the Tigers’ 30th consecutive home victory. The win extends its school record for both the longest home winning streak and the longest home unbeaten streak in school history.

The game saw a 1:52 lightning delay with 0:32 to play in the first half.

After Shipley’s first touchdown in the first quarter, Georgia Tech kept the Tigers close throughout, getting on the board first with a field goal after the lightning delay. The Jackets scored all eight of their points after the delay, and recovered an onside kick with 1:19 to play in the game and the Tigers ahead by eight. However, the Clemson defense would hold as the Yellow Jackets were stopped on fourth-and-goal at the two-yard line. The Tigers defense has yet to surrender an offensive touchdown this season.

The Yellow Jackets would add two final points on a safety with 0:07 seconds to play in the contest.

Shipley scored the lone touchdown in the first half on a three-yard run that capped an eight-play 39-yard drive, and his second touchdown came in the fourth quarter on another three-yard run that capped a 14-play 66-yard drive.

Brent Cimaglia would make two field goals of 22-yards for Georgia Tech, with their final two points coming on the safety late in the game.

With his two rushing touchdowns in the game, Shipley became the first Clemson player to rush for multiple touchdowns in multiple games as a true freshman since Travis Etienne (three) in 2017. He finished the night with 21 carries for 88-yards and two touchdowns.
