Duke, Temple previously faced, opposed one another in the Independence Bowl in 2018 in Shreveport Louisiana.

In that game Duke routed Temple 56-27 when Daniel Jones who is currently the starting quarterback for the New York Giants of the NFL was Duke’s starting quarterback! In that game Daniel Jones threw for 423 yards and five touchdowns, senior wide receiver T.J. Rahmingcaught 12 passes for 240 yards and two scores. In that game Temple lost 27-56 Temple and Duke traded scores throughout the first 30 minutes with the 48 points making for the highest combined scoring first half in Temple bowl history. The Owls couldn't get much going in the second half and were unable to keep the Blue Devils out of the endzone, resulting in a lopsided victory for Duke.

>After starting the game on offense with a quick three-and-out, the Owls set up on defense. On the third play of the drive, Duke completed a 62-yard pass to get all the way to the Owls' three yardline. The Blue Devils eventually punched it in on a QB keeper to take the first lead of the game 7-0.

>Isaiah Wright took the ensuing kickoff 74-yards to set up the offense on the Duke 26 yardline. After converting a third down on a pass from QB Anthony Russo to WR Brodrick Yancy, Russo took the ball 15 yards on a read-option into the endzone to even the score 7-7.
