Duke is hitting the road today for their inaugural road game of 2022 season under new Head Coach Mike Elko as they play at Northwestern.

A season ago Duke, Northwestern faced, opposed one another on the gridiron in Durham under then Head Coach David Cutcliffe.

In that game Duke won 30-23 because high-powered first half and strong defensive lifted Duke past Northwestern, 30-23, Saturday afternoon at Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium.

Graduate student quarterback Gunnar Holmberg, senior wide receiver Jake Bobo and senior running back Mataeo Durant led the offense, becoming the 17th trio in program history to record 300-plus passing yards, 100-plus receiving yards and 100-plus rushing yards, respectively, in a single game.

The Duke defense plagued Northwestern, causing five turnovers on the day. Redshirt senior safety Lummie Young IV, redshirt senior cornerback Leonard Johnson and redshirt junior cornerback Jeremiah Lewis each recorded an interception while Young IV and sophomore defensive tackle DeWayne Carterforced fumbles. Graduate student defensive end Ben Frye added recoveries on both of the fumbles.

Duke jumped out to a 27-0 lead after the opening 28 minutes following two touchdowns by Durant, a nine-yard score by freshman quarterback Jordan Mooreand two field goals from redshirt sophomore kicker Charlie Ham. Durant's two scores handed him eight on the season, with seven of those via the ground game.

Northwestern was able to break through and register their first touchdown of the game to pull within 27-7 with 1:25 remaining in the half but a career-long 50-yard field goal by Ham would give the Blue Devils a 30-7 edge at the break.

Northwestern would not go away, scoring 16 points in the second half but the Duke defense would hold strong down the stretch to register its second consecutive win.

Gunnar Holmberg finished his day 31-of-44 passing for 314 yards and a touchdown. Durant led the rushing corps with 102 yards on 22 carries with a score. He also added four receptions for 41 yards and a touchdown.

Jake Bobo surpassed 100-yards receiving for the first time in his career after amassing 109 yards on Saturday. He becomes the first player to register 100-plus receiving yards since Aaron Young did so against Middle Tennessee in 2019.

In that game Northwestern lost to Duke 23-30 Despite a valiant comeback effort mounted by senior quarterback Andrew Marty, Northwestern fell 30-23 at Duke on the road on Saturday.

Marty recorded career-highs in passing yards (151), passing touchdowns (2), completions (11) and attempts (16). He rushed for another score on the ground and added 44 yards overall with his legs. He took over with Northwestern trailing 27-0 in the second quarter and in less than seven minutes of game time, reduced the deficit to 30-20.

Marshall Lang and Jacob Gill each caught their first career touchdown passes on the day. Bryce Kirtz led the receiving corps with 72 yards on three receptions. Running back Evan Hullled the offense with 80 all-purpose yards including 49 on the ground and 28 through the air.

Four Northwestern players recorded double-digit tackles on the day, led by Peter McIntyre with career-high 15, the most tackles in a game by.a Wildcat since Nov. 17, 2018, when Travis Whillock had 15. McIntyre becomes just the 14th player since at least 2000 to record 15 or more tackles in a game. Bergin tallied 13 tackles for his ninth game with 10+ tackles and third this season, while Coco Azema registered a career-high 11. Samdup Miller recorded 11 stops as well for his second career game with double digit tackles.

Senior Hunter Johnson started and threw for 75 yards. Sophomore Ryan Hilinski appeared after Marty exited the game with an upper body injury, and totalled 34 yards while leading a fourth-quarter drive to make it a one-possesion game.
