A Season Ago NC State, Clemson Opposed Each Other In Raleigh! As NC State, 21st Ranked Clemson Are Opposing Each Other Saturday At Noon They're Opposing Each Other In Clemson South Carolina

NC State, Clemson previously opposed each other a season ago in North Carolina’s capital when NC State topped Clemson 24-17 on October 28, 2023

As NC State topped Clemson 24-17 behind Kevin "KC" Concepcion's two touchdowns and a Payton Wilson pick-six, NC State gave the Wolfpack faithful a homecoming victory. With the victory, head coach Dave Doeren has now tied the record for most victories in program history with 77 wins. He joins Earle Edwards, who won 77 games from 1954 to 1970. It was also Doeren's 100th career victory overall.

This marks the second straight meeting NC State has taken down Clemson from Carter-Finley and the first time since 2011 the Tigers have lost back-to-back games.

In a one-score game with Clemson in possession of the football with 4:23 left on the clock, the Wolfpack defense stood tall, not allowing the Tigers on the Wolfpack side of the field, forcing them to 14 plays for only 35 yards.

Offensively, MJ Morris was efficient with the football, going 11-20 138 yards, two touchdowns, and no turnovers. Concepcion once again led the receiving core with five receptions for 83 yards and two touchdowns, giving him six on the season. Concepcion also led NC State in the rushing department, totaling 51 yards on two attempts.

The Wolfpack struck first with a nine-yard touchdown from Morris to Concepcion to give NC State a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. NC State extended their lead to 10 as Brayden Narveson drilled a 41-yard field goal after an eight-play 55-yard drive.

The 10-point lead for NC State was cut to three as Clemson converted from the one-yard line, getting into the endzone for their first score of the game courtesy of a Phil Mafah run.

Clemson looked to tie the game up at 10 a piece with a field goal just before time expired, but after a time-out from NC State, the second attempt was missed, keeping the score 10-7 in favor of the Wolfpack.

Payton Wilson's fifth career interception gave the Wolfpack a 10-point advantage as he took it back 15 yards to the endzone to make it 17-7.

After another defensive stop, the Wolfpack offense took advantage as Morris and Concepcion connected once again, this time a 72-yard score to give NC State their largest lead of the afternoon.

The 72 yards are both career-best for Morris's longest completion and Concepcion's longest reception.

Clemson put together 10 straight points, but it wasn't enough as NC State held off the comeback. Sean Brown led the Wolfpack defense with 11 tackles and Jaylon Scott with 10. The defense forced two turnovers, had two sacks, and managed nine tackles for a loss.

When Clemson lost 24-17 in North Carolina’s state capital Clemson outscored NC State 10-0 in the fourth quarter but the Tigers’ comeback attempt fell short as NC State defeated Clemson, 24-17, at Carter-Finley Stadium on Saturday. Clemson dropped to 4-4 (2-4 ACC) while NC State improved to 5-3 (2-2 ACC).

Clemson’s defense held NC State to 202 yards, and the Tigers outgained the Wolfpack, 364-202, but NC State converted two takeaways into 14 points in the Wolfpack’s seven-point win.

Quarterback Cade Klubnik threw for 263 yards and was 33-of-50 passing on the day. Klubnik found Jake Briningstool for a career-high eight receptions for 93 yards. Phil Mafah stepped up following a second-quarter injury to Will Shipley, as Mafah scored both Clemson touchdowns and rushed for 84 total yards on 16 carries.

NC State took advantage of an early Klubnik interception on its own 40-yard line, scoring first after a 50-yard rush set up a nine-yard touchdown reception from Kevin Concepcion with 7:18 to play in the first quarter.

NC State extended the lead to 10-0 on a Brayden Narveson 41-yard field goal in the second quarter. On its ensuing drive, Clemson went 75 yards in nine plays as Phil Mafah punched in his career-high fifth touchdown of the season with 8:24 to play before halftime. Klubnik hit on four passes of nine yards or longer during the touchdown drive, including a 28-yarder to Beaux Collins, who made a contested catch on the right sideline.

Five minutes into the third quarter, the Wolfpack upped their lead to 17-7 when Payton Wilson returned a deflected Klubnik pass 15 yards for a touchdown. NC State scored again on a 72-yard connection from MJ Morris to Concepcion with 4:35 to play in the third quarter, taking a 24-7 lead.

Early in the fourth quarter, Mafah capped a 10-play 75-yard drive with another one-yard score, which cut the deficit to 24-14. After Clemson’s defense forced a pair of three-and-outs, Mafah jump-started another Clemson scoring drive with a 41-yard gain on the first play of a possession to carry the Tigers to the NC State nine-yard line. A 19-yard field goal by Jonathan Weitz at the end of that possession pulled the score to 24-17.

Clemson forced NC State to punt, giving the Tigers the ball back trailing by seven points with 4:23 left to play in the game. An incompletion on 4th-and-19 kept the score at 24-17 and gave NC State the ball and the eventual victory.

After playing only one home game in the month of October, the Tigers will return home next week to kickoff a three-game homestand in November when the Tigers face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Saturday, Nov. 4. An exact kickoff time is still to be announced, though the ACC has indicated options for kickoff time are limited to either noon or 3:30 p.m. ET. Tickets and gameday experiences for Clemson’s remaining three home games at Memorial Stadium remain available.
