Double Header As New York Takes On Houston On Derek Jeter Night In The Bronx

Today New York not only plays a doubleheader against Houston but they also celebrate the captain Derek Jeter in the nightcap as he will have his number two retired to Monument Park at Yankee Stadium.

Derek Jeter made his debut on May 29th, 1995 against Seattle.

The following year, in his first full season as a Major League Baseball player, he batted .314 with 10 home runs. The skilled shortstop also performed well in the infield and helped the Yankees win the World Series against the Atlanta Braves. Jeter won the 1996 American League Rookie of the Year Award for his performance that season.

Derek Jeter developed into one of baseball's top all-around players and the lynchpin of a perennially dominant Yankees team. He earned his first of 14 All-Star selections in 1998, a season that ended with the first of three straight world championships for the Bronx Bombers. He led the majors in hits and tallied career highs in home runs and RBIs in 1999, and in 2000 he became the first player to be named the All-Star Game and World Series MVP in the same season. Known for his patented "inside-outhttp://www.biography.com/people/derek-jeter-189311" swing and acrobatic jump-throws, Jeter developed a reputation as a player who thrived in pressure-packed moments. In perhaps the most famous play of his career, he ran down an errant throw from the outfield and delivered "The Flip" to home plate to record an important out against the Oakland A's in the 2001 playoffs. A few weeks later, he blasted a 10th-inning home run to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks in Game 4 of the World Series. His winning style earned the respect and admiration of coaches, sports commentators, peers, and fans, and he was named team captain in 2003. Jeter suffered his first major injury that season when a collision left him with a separated shoulder, but he was as good as ever after returning. He won the first of five gold glove awards for fielding excellence in 2004, and in 2006 he finished second in the voting for the league MVP award.

In September 2009, Jeter passed Lou Gehrig with his 2,722nd hit -- the most in franchise history -- before earning his fifth world championship ring at the end of the season. In July 2011, he homered to become the 28th player in history to reach 3,000 career hits. "according to http://www.biography.com/people/derek-jeter-189311

The captain was limited to just 17 games in 2013 due to a lingering ankle injury, Derek  Jeter announced he would be retiring after the 2014 season, his 20th in the majors. Although his numbers were well below his usual lofty standards, "The Captain" proved he could still rise to the occasion for big moments. He started a rally for the American League with a leadoff double in the All-Star Game and knocked home the game-winning run in his final at-bat at Yankee Stadium in September. In addition to his five world championships, Jeter finished with an impressive .310 lifetime batting average, and his 3,465 hits ranked sixth in big league history. What moment will you remember most about Derek Jeter's career? The one moment that I will always remember about Derek Jeter's career is in July 2011 he got his 3,000 hit off left -hander David Price who then was a member of the Tampa Bay Rays. He is currently a member of the Boston Redsox.

Houston Astros catcher Brian Mccann had this to say about Derek Jeter who he played with in 2014."He changed his whole generation," McCann said. "My generation, when I first came up, everybody wanted to be Derek Jeter. As for other Houston Astros players shortstop, Carolos Correa had this to say about the captain He was a role model for I feel like every kid that played shortstop growing up,"  "He played the game the right away and obviously off the field he was a great guy, as well. He never got into trouble. Your parents want you to follow a guy like him. You watched him play and you fell in love with the way he played the game." according to tohttp://www.houstonchronicle.com/sports/astros/article/The-Jeter-influence-echoes-through-Astros-11144001.php

As for the doubleheader because of the weather, Saturday New York who has a record of 21-12 and Houston who has a record of 25-11 will play game one with New York right-hand pitcher Luis Severino getting the start. He has a record of -2 2 with a 3.40 earn run average is coming off pitching the first seven innings of an eighteen inning game against Chicago where he only allowed one run. He's on at least in four of his six outings.  He has a 0.98 WHIP and has struck out forty-five while walking seven and will go up against Houston right -hander Mike Fiers who has a record of 1-1 with a 5.64 earn run average. He has surrendered an A.L leading fourteen homers while his earn run average is the worst in Houston's rotation. Despite giving up two early homers in his last start in Anaheim against Los Angeles he grinded through to pick up his first win of the year.  First pitch is set for 2:05 pm. The game will be televised on yes.

Game two features New York ace right -hander Masahiro Tanaka who has a record of 5-1 with a 4.36 earn run average to go along with thirty-two strikeouts. He has pitched like his old self since allowing seven runs in just 2/2/3 innings in his season debut against Tampa Bay. The Japanese right-hander has allowed fourteen earned runs in 40/2/3 innings and he has an earn run average of 3.10 since that outing. He will take on Houston right -hander Charlie Morton who has a record of 4-2 with a 3.63 earn run average. He has struck out a quarter of the batters he has faced this season but threw only 48 of his  84 pitches for strikes in a win over Atlanta on Tuesday. Still, the right -hander has allowed three earned runs or fewer in five of his seven starts. First pitch is time to be decided. Will the New York offense be able to backup Luis Severino in the first game? Will he have as good an outing as he did in his last start against the world champion Chicago Cubs? Will the New York offense be able to back up ace Masahiro Tanaka's start on the night captain Derek Jeter gets his number two retired to Monument  Park? Will New York win both games or will the teams split them?

First pitch is time to be decided.
